XH498 was involved in a very embarrassing incident when on October 25, 1959, it clipped an embankment while attempting to land during the opening of Wellington's new international airport. The port landing gear was left dangling. XH498 diverted to Ohakea where it landed safely albeit with the port gear collapsed. Repaired it continued in service until 1967. The Doak VZ-4 was transferred from Edwards AFB to NASA Langley in the autumn of 1959. There is evidence of a press demonstration at Davison AAF, Fort Belvoir on 13 October of that year. KDAA used to have a Rwy 31 and Hank Walker's October 1959 photos were clearly taken here. Photo by: Hank Walker / Life
