Seen here exactly three months after making her first flight after a highly protracted restoration programme, this Seafire was built by Westland in 1944. Marks represent an aircraft of 880 Sqn FAA when embarked on HMS Implacable. Although several restorations are underway, only four Seafires are currently airworthy

Painted as AG244 in this unusual silver scheme to represent a Rhodesian Air Force example, this Hurricane is a newcomer to the flying set. A Canadian-built Mk. XII operated by the RCAF as 5487, she crashed in 1942. Restored by Classic Aero Engineering/Phoenix Aero Services at Thruxton and briefly appeared in Finnish AF marks in summer 2014 after first post-rebuild flight. Owned by Karl-Friedemann Grimminger

In June 1958 Yugoslavia purchased two examples of the private-venture Gnat for evaluation, both being delivered by rail. They were flown by the flight test centre but one was written off in a belly landing after a hydraulics failure in October 1958. Although at one stage there was interest in licence production of up to 700 single and two-seater Gnats, no further aircraft were ordered and second-hand F-86 Sabres were acquired instead

The only remaining full example of a Valiant anywhere on the planet, XD818 was the actual aircraft that dropped Britain's first hydrogen bomb. Returning passengers to Antwerp after a day shopping excursion, this DC-6 suffered a nose-gear collapse when the F/E raised the undercarriage prematurely just after V1 the day before this photo was taken. 105 on board escaped unharmed after the aircraft skidded to a halt at the end of r/w 24. The tail damage was caused by debris thrown up by the propellers impacting the tarmac. Later scrapped at Southend.

Although flown by the 58th TTW in full USAF markings, the Starfighters at Luke were German-owned and used to train pilots without the weather and airspace constraints of Europe. They even had WGAF serials allocated, this one being 27+64. This one is unusual in that it was painted grey - most were natural metal like the one next up the serial range parked behind
