Designer Richard Hardin with his Ace 300, completed in March 1931 at the manufacturer's 'Ace Airport, formerly Murphy Airport, at Telegraph Road and Atlantic Boulevard,' Los Angeles. The 'companion' Ace 500, NX953, was a tandem two-seater. Information from aviation historian John Underwood corrects confusion about the model numbers. Aerofiles is mistaken in linking these aircraft to the Aircraft Engineering Ace K-1 biplane, built in New York City in 1919. Photo from: Nationaal Archief (Netherlands)

VH-DMA was overloaded with sheets of glass and tins of paint when it managed to get airborne from a private airstrip 4 miles south of Katherine after the third attempt . It staggered along for 8 miles before coming down in a paddock and flipping on its back. The three occupants survived but DMA was written off. Photo from: Library and Archives NT

The Andrews A1 was a half-scale version of a proposed agricultural aircraft, the Andrews A2. That was not built when it became apparent the Fletcher FU-24 would be the dominant ag aircraft in NZ. The A1 remains registered in 2023 and is a regular sight at air shows and fly-ins. Photo from: Evening Post / Alexander Turnbull Library

VH-ASD was operated by Maurice Oliver at the time of the photo. He had planned to use the aircraft for cattle mustering. It was not as successful as hoped and the aircraft was sold. It crashed at Quamby, Queensland, on February 9, 1955. Aerial cattle mustering was later widely adopted initially with fixed wing aircraft but now more commonly with light helicopters. Rebuilding the German army. The photo illustrates the use of construction numbers as serials by the German military in this period - the c/n is repeated on the tailplane endplate. 1215 made its test flights as F-WIEM, and went through four different codes, PD-132, PQ-140, PG-132 and PG-202. It became 7509 in the later serial system. The second Alouette seems to be 1193. Photo from: Nationaal Archief (Netherlands)

In 2012 the Conair Group donated their Tanker #64 to the Canadian Museum of Flight. It is seen here on its last flight, making a nice water drop before landing at her final resting place at the museum in Langley, BC. This Tracker started life on 1 April 1958 as 1539 of the Canadian Navy. It was transferred to the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources on 28 Sep 1972 as CF-OPU, and flew for them as Tanker #54 until acquired by Conair in 1980. They converted it to Firecat (conversion number 007) in 1981, and as Tanker #64 it would serve them well for 31 years! Photo by: Mike Luedey / Yellow Drum Productions.

Rally at Ypenburg. There were not many Dutch Ercoupes but here there are four of them: PH-NCG, PH-NCF, PH-NBD, and PH-NCE, behind the PA-12s Cub Cruisers PH-NCZ and PH-NCX. The shed behind the Siebel Si-204, PH-NLL, reads 'Postkantoor' (post office). See cropped photo 562578 for PH-NAL and the other aircraft. Photo by: Anton Snikkers / Nationaal Archief (Netherlands)

Crop of overview photo 562611. Three FK.43s can be seen. PH-NAL and PH-NAK (far right) were built after the war by Fokker. PH-NAU (on left) is a 1938 original (c/n 4311), ex PH-ASN, which was flown to England on 14 May 1940. Behind it a Fokker S.9, again built post-war, Miles Gemini G-AKHJ and Fokker F.25 prototype PH-NBA. The two Swiss Fairchild 24s are HB-EAN and HB-EIK. G-AGVN is an Auster J-1 Autocrat. To the right are four planes of the Nationale Luchtvaart School: Tiger Moths PH-UCA and PH-UCD and Piper Cubs PH-UCT and PH-UCE. Photo by: Anton Snikkers / Nationaal Archief (Netherlands)

Despite two prominent private customers, Harold Vanderbilt and speedboat magnate Garfield Wood, the six-passenger F-11 flying boat was not very successful. This airframe was tested by the US Army as the YC-16. Here it is seen wearing Western Air Express markings. WAE was affiliated with the American Fokker company and may have considered it for its seaplane service to Catalina Island, but WAE never operated the aircraft. Location thought to be the Teterboro factory airfield. Photo from: Nederlands Instituut voor Militaire Historie
