Schiphol one year after the war, with an armada of British Austin K2/Y ambulances. The shiny 1939 DC-3 of Swissair, HB-IRE, contrasts with the untitled olive drab KLM C-47A, PH-TBH, ex 42-100731. It became MM61776 in 1950 and is preserved at Vigna di Valle. On the far right are several C-54s, including NL-307. See crop for DC-3 PH-TBD and DC-4 PH-TAT. There are also two DH.89s in the picture. For a number of years this C-47 is preserved near the border between Slovenia and Croatia close to the village of Otok. It serves as a monument to a provisional airfield called Piccadilly Hope which was used by the allied forces during World War II in order to supply the Partisans led by Josip Broz Tito in their fight against Nazi Germany. The aircraft was delivered as KG783 to the Royal Air Force in August 1944 and also flew for the French Air Force before ending up with the Yugoslav Air Force somewhere around 1971.

Withdrawn from use in 1983. Fuselage reported to be at the Smash Palace Bar in Gisborne. ZK-BKD came to New Zealand in 1953 from Australian National Airways which had operated it as VH-ANU. Like other DC-3/C-47s in the ANA fleet it had been fitted with Wright R-1820 engines. The New Zealanders converted it back to Pratt and Whitney R-1830 engines. Bob Kerr photo.
