The first of only six S-58 helicopters - HUS-1Gs 1332 through 1336 and 1343 - to serve in the US Coast Guard, which received the HH-52 Seaguard instead. The 6A tail code of the Skyraiders in the background hints at NAS Anacostia as the photo location. 1332 went to the USAF as 63-7972 and to Air America in August 1963, then to the Laotian air force. This USCG PBY was based at Argentina in Newfoundland and came to the rescue following the crash of a Sabena DC-4, OO-CBG, near Gander. Two early USCG helicopters, a Sikorsky HOS-1 and HSN-1 051, took survivors from the crash site to the shore of Gander Lake where they were transferred to the PBY. 48314 is a retained US Navy BuNo. The V prefix for USCG serials was officially discontinued on 28 December 1945. This Albatross was originally built as a SA-16A and was TOC with the USAF in 1953 as 51-7228. It was then transferred to the Coast Guard, becoming 7228 and a UF-1G. Around 1957 it was converted to an UF-2G, which was in September 1962 redesignated as HU-16E. It served at USCG Air Station Annette, AK and USCG Air Station Miami, FL (possibly others). By 1980 the plane was part of the National Naval Aviation Museum Loan Program at NAS Pensacola and four years later was transported to the New England Air Museum, where it is now on outside display.

O2U-2 serial number 303 was Initially commissioned in May 1934, however in 1936 the U.S. Coast Guard adopted a new serial number system, consisting of the letter "V" followed by a three-digit number and this aircraft became V119. The "19" indicated that this was the 19th aircraft acquired by the USCG. This aircraft saw service until April 1937. Scanned from an original reproduced USCG photograph dated 1st July 1956, from my collection, photographer unknown.

This aircraft is listed as crashing at Cape May, New Jersey on January 19, 1935. The photo shows it almost two years later. A rebuild explains why it was reserialled as V136 long after the 1935 accident, which had been viewed as an anomaly. Photo by: Rudy Arnold / Smithsonian Institution
