First appearing entering combat in May 1918, the Fokker D. VII quickly showed its superior performance over Allied fighters. With its high rate of climb, higher ceiling and excellent handling characteristics, German pilots scored a remarkable 565 victories over Allied aircraft during the month of August alone. The reproduction aircraft on display at the National Museum of the USAF is painted to represent the Fokker D. VII of Lt. Rudolph Stark, a squadron leader of Jasta 35b in Oct. 1918.

The CG-4A was the most widely used US troop/cargo glider of WWII. Constructed of fabric-covered wood and metal, the CG-4A was crewed by a pilot and co-pilot. It could carry 13 troops and their equipment or a jeep, a quarter-ton truck or a 75mm howitzer loaded through the upward-hinged nose section. Fifteen companies manufactured over 12,000 CG-4As and this survivor is on display at the National Museum of the USAF.

The QU-22B was to be an unmanned airborne relay for the Igloo White operation during the Southeast Asia War. Igloo White placed and monitored sensors to detect traffic along the Ho Chi Minh Trail. Due to equipment reliability problems all operational flights carried a pilot and the system worked well but, due to the loss of several aircraft, the QU-22 program was cancelled in 1972 and this aircraft went on display at the National Museum of the USAF in 2002.

The YPT-16 was a military version of the civilian Ryan STA and became the first monoplane acquired by the Army Air Corps as a primary trainer. This aircraft flew as NC18922 in civilian life but is on display at the National Museum of the USAF as one of the 15 YPT-16 operated by the AAC. They must have been satisfied and this led on to the AAC operating nearly 1,200 more similar Ryan trainers as PT-20s, PT-21s and PT-22s.

The AT-11 was the standard USAAF WWII bombing trainer, with about 90% of the more than 45,000 USAAF bombardiers trained on AT-11s. This example, on display at the National Museum of the USAF, is one of 1,582 ordered by the USAAF between 1941-1945 and is painted to represent a trainer in service during the autumn of 1943.

The H-19/HRS-1 was the first practical single-rotor utility helicopter and the first in Sikorsky's successful S-55 series. The centre-of-gravity problems of earlier models were solved by shifting the engine to the front and the passenger compartment to beneath the rotor hub. Other innovations included offset-flapping hinges and hydraulically boosted irreversible controls. This example is now on display at the Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center of the Smithsonian NASM. Ex US Marines 127799.

This diorama at the NMUSAF is configured to appear as the UH-1F flown by Capt. Jim Fleming on 26th Nov. 1968, when he braved intense enemy fire to rescue a small reconnaissance team that was about to be overrun by a much larger enemy force. For his bravery, Captain Fleming was awarded the Medal of Honor.

This Tropical Spitfire (note the huge cooling air intake) was built for Supermarine under license by Vickers-Armstrong in June 1943. It was shipped to Australia in September 1943, where it served with the RAAF as A58-246. It is on display at the National Museum of the USAF in Operation Torch (the invasion of North Africa in November 1942) markings as MA863 / HL-B 31st Fighter Group, 308th Fighter Squadron.

The L-1 liaison aircraft, originally designated O-49, was the military version of the civilian Stinson Model 74. This example was delivered to the USAAF around 1941 as 40-0291 but is on display at the National Museum of the USAF in this nice US Army medivac scheme.

This NA-64 served with the RCAF as 3417 but is on display at the National Museum of the USAF in this nice diorama to represent an Army Air Corps Bt-14 involved in a training accident. Note the pilot pleading with the instructor that the fact the brakes were applied too hard... really wasn't his fault!

Initially conceived as a two-seat training version of the F-100, to help reduce the retatively high rate of accident losses, the F-version in SE Asia proved ideally suited for new missions: surface to air missile (SAM) suppression ('Iron Hand') and high-speed forward air control ('Misty FAC'). This Hun was a Misty FAC aircraft assigned to the 37th TFW at Phu Cat AB, Vietnam and went on display at the National Museum of the USAF in 2003.

This is one of 45 examples of the MXY7-K1 Ohka glider completed and used to train pilots for kamikaze attacks with the Model 11 Ohka. This training version had to be re-used and so is equipped with a landing skid and flaps. It also carried water ballast, which was expelled before landing, in place of explosives and the rocket motor. This example is now on display within the WWII Gallery at the National Museum of the USAF.

This Mosquito is in reality RS709, a B.Mk. 35, but has been restored to a USAAF Mk. XVI configuration and given the fake aerial NS519, a weather reconnaissance aircraft of the 653rd BS based in England in 1944-1945. This Mosquito was also formerly G-ASKA, N9797 and G-MOSI.

During the early Cold War years the USAF needed to be able to gather information, such as location, range and coverage, on Soviet radar capability. To meet this need the RB-47H was developed (from the B-47E) and this example came the the National Museum of the USAF in 1998 and following extensive restoration went on display in 2003. She was originally delivered in 1955 and served with the 55th Strategic Reconnaisance Wing until 1966.
