This photo is captioned Daly Waters 1940 but that cannot be the case. After just 9 months with ANA and the start of WW2, VH-ACB was leased to the RAAF as A30-4 and camouflaged. The lease ended in May 1940 and ANA markings reapplied. However the Douglas Aircraft logos applied to the nose and tail at the factory, and seen here, were not reapplied. The photo is at one of the south-eastern Australian airports served by ANA, most likely Essendon or Archerfield. ACB written off in a forced landing near Essendon on April 14, 1943. An oddity among the DC-3s acquired by ANA after World War II. Ordered by American Airlines, it was taken over by the USAAC on the production line and delivered as a C-50. Fitted with a C-47 style double cargo door but on the starboard side instead of port. ANA used it as a freighter. Sold in New Zealand as ZK-BWE in 1955. Fitted with Pratt and Whitney R-1830 engines in place of Wright R-1820s before delivery. Photo from: David Caughey Collection

What makes this photo unusual is the Australian National Airways logo. UYB was owned by ANA but the ANA logo on the fin has been changed to AOA aka Airlines of Australia. ANA owned AOA which continued to operate as a separate airline until 1942 on services north of Brisbane. Ross Plains airport was opened in 1930. Postwar the RAAF aerodrome at Garbutt became Townsville's civil airport. Photo from: Townsville City Library

VH-ANV was a C-47A converted to civil standards with Wright R-1820 engines and a passenger door by ANA in 1946. In 1953 the double doors were reinstalled and it operated as a freighter with ANA and Ansett-ANA until withdrawn from use in 1968. Sold in Cambodia in 1971 as XU-EAH. You can hear the roar from here... Australian National Airways' Douglas DC-6 VH-INW 'Kurana' at full takeoff power tucks away her gear, probably at Essendon in the early 1950s. This aircraft was delivered to National Airlines in the USA in 1947, registered N90894. When ANA bought her in 1953, they liked the National colour scheme so much that they adopted it themselves. Kurana was transferred to ANSETT-ANA when the airlines merged in 1957, and was sold back to the USA in 1960. She spent time on the Nicaraguan and El Salvadoran registers and was scrapped at Miami in 1977.

An ANA publicity photo taken prior to VH-INH's delivery to Australia. ANA was later bought out by Ansett, becoming ANSETT-ANA. VH-INH was later transferred to rival airline TAA as part of a fleet-balancing arrangement under Australia's 'two airline policy', before being sold in 1967 to Denmark as OY-STP.
