The prototype XP-87 (Curtiss Model 29A) at what may be its rollout at the factory. The aircraft was dismantled and trucked to Muroc (Edwards AFB) for its first flight in March 1948. A USAF order was cancelled when it was decided the Northrop F-89 would be a better all-weather fighter. Thus ended Curtiss as an aircraft manufacturer and it sold its Columbus factory to North American. The Curtiss-Wright X-19 of 1963, was a tiltwing experiment built by the company's propeller division at Caldwell, New Jersey. Photo by: Hans Groenhoff / Smithsonian Institution

British ground crews working on Soviet Spitfires in Iran - they were shipped to Basra and transferred to the Russians in nearby Abadan. The Russians didn't like the Spitfire very much. It seems they didn't get the best airframes as BM186 and BL625, the third aircraft, had both met with accidents in RAF service during 1942 and the second, AD236, was a 1941 veteran. These three had already arrived in Basra before the end of 1942. Photo by: Sgt Neill / Imperial War Museums

Helicopters were a rare sight in New Zealand when the HMAS Sydney visited Wellington in May 1955. The first New Zealand owned helicopter, a civil Hiller UH-12, had flown only four months earlier. The Sycamore from 723 Squadron put on a demonstration at Basin Reserve, which is Wellingon's cricket ground. XD656 experienced engine trouble and was forced to ditch into the sea near the submarine HMS Telemachus on November 21, 1957. Photo from: Evening Post / Alexander Turnbull Library

The pristine condition of the C-46 would indicate this is at Buffalo where it was built for the Republic of China air force under lend-lease (USAAF 44-78627). Suffered a minor accident at Dakar on delivery. Repaired, it flew on to Cairo where it was damaged beyond repair on September 10, 1945. Photo by: Hans Groenhoff / Smithsonian Institution

The Ro.5 sport aircraft was built 'in large numbers', also for the Italian air force. Despite the fasces roundel, this seems to be a civilian plane. I-FIDO is listed as a Ro.5bis but the Ro.5bis had enclosed cockpits. Photo probably taken before the opening of the Aero Show at Olympia on 16 July 1929. It appeared in the Flight edition of 18 July. Three examples were built of the Ba.79 four-seat cabin monoplane: I-ABFU, I-ABFT (c/n 78002), the nose of which is on the right, and I-ABFZ (78003). The latter two were to Ba.79S (Superiore) standard and ABFU seems to have been upgraded later. Seen on the far left are two products of the Compagnia Nazionale Aeronautica: the CNA 15 low-wing four-seater and the CNA 25, a parallel high-wing design. Photo from: Fondazione Fiera Milano

It has carried six other registrations between the photo and today - VH-EBY, VH-SBG, P2-SBG, P2-ANP, N5590A and finally VH-BPL. Last registration cancelled in 1996. Aersilta was Italy's first helicopter operator, founded by Leone Concato. The heliport was named for Leonardo da Vinci and situated on the roof of the Milan Fair's Pavilion 32. It is assumed to be the same spot as Fiera Milano City Heliport. Photo from: Fondazione Fiera Milano

When C-119s were first loaned to the French in Vietnam in 1953, US markings had reportedly been removed carefully, but that was clearly not the case during the Squaw II deployment in 1954. The second aircraft even still wears the 'Packet Rats' name of the 65th Troop Carrier Squadron. Another photo confirms that the first is tail number 9187 (full USAF serial 49-187). Note that the Flying Boxcars appear to operate without their clamshell doors. From 14 to 16 March 1954, two airborne batallions were parachuted into Dien Bien Phu. Photo by: Joe Scherschel / Life

The Z.501 Gabbiano (mew) single-engined military flying boat had long endurance, but wasn't very robust or seaworthy and suffered heavy losses during WWII. This modified Z.501, I-AGIL, set a seaplane distance record of 4130 km in May 1934, flying from Monfalcone to Massawa in Eritrea. A French seaplane flew 4335 km in June. I-AGIL then managed 4930 km (3060 miles) to Berbera, in Somaliland, in July 1934 - or Anno XII in the Fascist year count. Cantieri Riumiti dell'Adriatico (CRDA) was Cant's full name. French Flying Boxcars - sort of! The USAF loaned some C-119s to the French forces in Vietnam from May 1953. They were flown by mixed Civil Air Transport (CAT) and French crews. 51-2541 was allocated call sign F-OYXB. It returned to Clark AFB, Philippines in July 1953, but here it is back in Vietnam in March 1954 during the Battle of Dien Bien Phu when the C-119s flew very dangerous missions.
