Reregistered VH-BTW in June 1961. Aircraft had been flown by Fr Edward Bryan as part of his pastoral work and also in support of the Flying Doctor Service. At the time of the photo Port Hedland had two civil aerodrome, the racecourse and one further from the town with longer runways. The racecourse aerodrome was notable for the railway embankment on its boundary (right background). This aerodrome closed but the other remains the current Port Hedland airport. Difficult times, and not just because of a severe winter. Wearing neutrality markings, PH-ALE is seen departing for Lisbon via Shoreham. She was based in Portugal to provide logistic support for KLM's DC-3 fleet on the East Indies line, which had Napels in Italy as its European terminus after the outbreak of WWII. PH-ALE was the only DC-2 to join the KLM operation in England, as G-AGBH. Having survived the war, she was sold to Southampton Air Services, only to crash at Malta - Luqa in October 1946. A wartime DC-3 of Pan Am, registered in May 1941. According to Wikipedia, Pan Am started calling itself Pan American World Airways in 1943. This only became official in 1950. NC33611 crashed at Port of Spain, Trinidad on 4 June 1945 and was written off. Construction number 34378/17111, a former C-47B, was painted and registered as N(C)33611 in 2013. Developed from the earlier Convair 116 ConvAirCar, conceived by Ted Hall, the Convair 118 was basically a car body supplied by Crosley with a detachable wing, Lycoming O-435 aero engine and tail unit. The prototype NX90850 first flew on 15 November 1947, but crashed three days later. It was rebuilt with a new car body, which is likely seen here as it was lighter in colour. Convair dropped plans to build 160,000 copies of this flying car. Photo from: San Diego Air & Space Museum

Photo date given as 8 December 1948 but that might be mistaken as that was also the date PH-TEA was registered. Was to become PH-CEA but sold to Swissair instead in November 1953 as HB-IRW. Ditched near Folkestone on 19 June 1954. Photo from: Nationaal Archief (Netherlands)

Ex Dutch East Indies. One of six taken on charge by the RAAF after being evacuated to Australia following the 1942 Japanese invasion of the Dutch East Indies. Used as transports between Australia and Papua New Guinea. They were difficult to maintain and unserviceable frequently. In 1944, the five survivors - one burned at its mooring because of an electrical fault - were flown to Lake Boga for storage. All were scrapped in 1945. The forward fuselage of an unknown one was saved when it became a houseboat. Photo from: State Library of Victoria

Ex NC23V of Standard Oil of New Jersey, which was apparently used in Venezuela. The NNGPM oil company was a consortium of subisidaries of Shell, Standard Oil of New Jersey (Esso) and Standard Oil of California (Texaco): the Bataafsche, Nederlandsche Koloniale and Nederlandsche Pacific oil companies, hence the aircraft name Bakopa. Seen on Yapen or Japen Island, Netherlands New Guinea. Scrapped in 1940. Registration reused on a Catalina in 1946. Photo from: Wereldmuseum

Built in 1943 for the RCAF, serial 9814. Served at Yarmouth, Nova Scotia and Torbay, Newfoundland. Stored in June 1945. Sold through Charles H Babb Co to Shell subsidiary Nederlandsch Nieuw-Guinea Petroleum Maatschappij (NNGPM). Delivered via Oakland in December 1946. The Canso was registered until August 1949. The photo source gives the date as 1953 which is highly unlikely. Another photo shows this aircraft on the water at Steenkool (now Bintuni), Bird's Head Peninsula, NNG. Photo from: Wereldmuseum
