Location was named Itazuke Air Base, Japan when photo was taken.

Ansett-ANA's Convair 440 VH-BZM (1957 - 1962), this aircraft was converted to a Convair 580 by Allegheny Airlines in 1968. Later flying for Commuter Airlines / Freedom Airlines, it came to Canada for Air Ontario in 1984. Pictured on lease to Canair Cargo (1991 - 1993), the aircraft is current as an air tanker with Conair (C-FKFL) at the time of uploading.

This Convair is pretending to be a HC-131A, but in fact it's a Convair 240-11 (ex N280P) which never saw any military service. It was donated to the Castle Air Museum in 1999 and registered to them as N280P on 23 Jun 1999. By Dec 2003 it had been restored in nice USCG markings as "5785". By Jul 2008 those markings had been removed in preparation of a repaint, which is seen in progress in this photo. By Oct 2011 it was back in now very poorly done USCG markings, again as "5785".

Ex CP-2236, registered to Rovos Air 5 Dec 2001. After years of storage it was prepared for delivery to the Aviodrome in Lelystad, Netherland in Martins Air Charter livery. On a test flight from Wonderboom the aircraft crashed due to a severe engine fire 10 July 2018.

Delivered to United as CV-340 N73139 in 1953. To Turbo-Prop conv Inc in 1960 for conversion to CV-540 with Napier Eland engines. Reg N546Z not taken up. Project stopped in 1962 when Rolls-Royce took over Napier and converted to a CV-440 for Allegheny. To the FAA as N117 in 1963 then to the US Department of Justice as N1179 in 1965, Williamsport Area Community College in 1972 and International Field Studies in 1979. To Florida Aircraft Leasing in 1986 and operated for the Wall Street Journal/Dow Jones. Scrapped at Fort Lauderdale in 1995.

Owned by European Air Transport to operate for DHL, it had not long arrived from the USA ex Summit Airlines (N537SA) and still in their colours and logo.

Ex Key Airlines. To Salair Nov 87 as N357SA. To Portugal as CS-TML May 97, first with Agroar the ACEF Transportes. To Air Atlantique Jul 2001 as G-CONV. Had problems with certification and remained stored Coventry (UK) until dismantled and transported to a nursery (garden centre) at Carluke Scotland where it still was in 2018.

Ex Combs Freightair. Originally SE-CRM with Linjeflyg (Sweden). Re-reg N114BF to Basler Turbo Conversions Dec 97. Never converted. Sold to the Weeks Air Museum, Polk City FL in Oct 2008. Still at Oshkosh in July 2006 with Basler Airlines titles.

We meet again, this time with titles. Ex Key Airlines, to Basler in Jun 86. Re-reg N115BF in May 95. Last seen stored Laredo TX in 1998.

On display at the Cradle of Aviation Museum. This aircraft was built as a CV-340-68 and was converted to a CV-440. It served with a number of airlines, and with the Luftwaffe as 12+01. Its last civil registration was N24AT. This nose section has been painted to represent a Lufthansa Convairliner. Lufthansa flew four CV-340s and seven CV-440s on short-haul routes, inaugurating its domestic services on April 1, 1955.

In 1987 this Convair was used by the NASA as a Space Shuttle Crew Escape System testbed. It was fitted with a CES (Crew Escape System) mockup on the left side of the rear fuselage. The aircraft was stored here at California City by 1993, and preserved by 1997, reportedly by a set-up called the California Museum of Air and Space.

As of Sep 1987 this Convair was used by the NASA as a Space Shuttle Crew Escape System testbed. This photo still shows the CES (Crew Escape System) mockup that was fitted to the left side of the rear fuselage. The CES was a candidate concept developed to provide crew egress capability during Space Shuttle controlled gliding flight. Actual tests of this system with this Convair began on 20 Nov 1987, whereby life-like dummies were pulled from the modified aircraft's side hatch mockup by tractor rockets. The aircraft had been stored here at California City by 1992, and preserved by 1997, reportedly by a set-up called the California Museum of Air and Space.
