Two hours after take-off from Lima, the crew realised that the magnetic compass was broken. Due to low fog the crew were not able get a visual fix so they climbed to FL180 to locate the Cordillera Mountain range. The recovery operation begins. Flight BA38 landed about 300 meters short of runway 27L on 18 Jan 2008, after both engines had lost power due to a restricted fuel flow. The left main gear was pushed up through the wing, and the right main gear separated from the wing entirely. Fuel leaked, but there was no fire. Actually witnessing the scene brought home the extraordinarily short distance in which Triple Mike stopped. The lack of deformation is some credit to the integrity of Boeing's design, too.

It was delightful to have the opportunity to shoot this superbly preserved VEB-built Il-14 in such nice conditions, well worth the 130km drive from Berlin. Once displayed in Interflug colours at the Halle ice stadium after being written off in a hard landing, it became derelict and was on the verge of being scrapped before being rescued by the Technik-Museum Hugo Junkers and restored in the colours of East Germany's Deutsche Lufthansa, the forerunner of Interflug
