This vintage Catalina was owned by Wilson Edwards since 2000, but in 2019 it was sold to another owner. In early August 2020 it was one of two Catalinas and several other warbirds that were shipped from NAS North Island to Hawaii aboard the USS Essex (LHD-2) for the 75th VJ-Day celebrations there, marking the end of WWII for the USA. It is seen here taking off from the waters of Pearl Harbor in preparation for those celebrations. Photo by: Mass Communication Specialist 2nd Class Charles Oki / DVIDS

Named Charlene, 42-30177 flew 18 missions with the US 388th Bomb Group in the second half of 1943. In 1944 the old B-17F was given to Free French general Pierre Kœnig whose troops fought bravely at Bir Hakeim in Libya. Kœnig made a tour around the world in it according to a confused report. Retired from the French air force in 1955, it became F-BGSG with the Institut Géographique National (IGN), but was only used as a spares source. Designed as a transport and 168-passenger airliner for the US Navy and Pan Am, the double-decker Constitution did not progress beyond two prototypes. In 1949, the second aircraft made a recruiting tour of 19 cities, carrying 'Your Navy - Air and Sea' titles. Over half a million people reportedly queued to get inside. The RM tailcode belonged to VR-44 at Alameda. Photo from: San Diego Air & Space Museum
