My first US trip included a highly rewarding excursion to the USAF Museum at Wright Field. This great old West Virginia ANG bird was shot from the pool of my nearby lodgings. In 1971 she visited Greenham Common, UK, from her Charleston base as a C-119G with 4-blade props but was modified to 'L' standard with 3 blades soon after. At one point she was also a test bed for Stealth technology, painted black with special $300/gallon paint. The frame still survives, exhibited at Fort Bragg, NC

One of Southend's 'Golden Viscounts' captured very shortly before her complete demise, Hotel Kilo was delivered by Vickers to Continental as N246V on 1.8.58. When Channel Airways acquired 11 Viscounts from Continental in 1966/7, the existing livery was adopted almost fully, receiving little more than a change of titling

This Brit was seized by HM Customs a few months after this shot (I remember seeing a photo of it carrying their titles and logo in a doctored b&w!). Ex XL660 and operated alongside G-BDLZ (my shot of 'LZ shows the two of them) until seizure 8.79; became A6-HMS with Gaylan in 4.80 then to 9Q-CGP of Katale A/T 11.82 and later b/u in Zaire. The ex Air Mauritanie DC-4 behind, 5N-ARC, had recently made a wheels-up landing during a test flight out of SEN for Arax Airlines

Delivered to Pan Am in 1970 and seen here taxiing for a 27R departure with the non-standard wide cheatline, the registration of this particular jumbo reminds me of an early Pan Am advertising campaign which said "Our 747 is so different we're tempted to call it the 748!". Little did they realise what a laugh they were giving anyone in the know. Retired to Marana and scrapped in 1993

This, the 10th Carvair conversion, was delivered to BUAF in 8.63 but immediately went to work with Alisud in Italy for six months. Changing name from "Channel Bridge" to "Big Joe" when BUAF became BAF in 1967, she was bought by TAR in 3.69 but leased back in 4.72, reverting to G-ASKG with BAF in 3.73. To Congo 2.75; broken up as 9Q-CTI at Kinshasa in 1995

After withdrawal in the late 1970's there was a hope she'd be preserved but despite a campaign led by a BAF Captain, sadly "Big John" was broken up in 12.83, closing an important chapter of Southend history

In 1971 this was the first of the much-improved 'M' variant of the 'Classic' to fly. Note the Paris show coding from an appearance at the 1973 Le Bourget Salon. It was coded 830 at the 1971 salon. Stored at the old Riga airport as an instructional airframe, she was broken up by 9.97. In 1991 the registration number was re-used on another 62, later stored by Domodedovo Airlines at the airport of the same name

"Fat Annie". Typical ramp scene in the mid-Seventies at SEN with four Carvairs on turn-around. I was just so fortunate to have my first job working airside at Southend Airport :-)
