The Aeromarine 75 could seat about ten passengers and was a civil conversion of the American-built Felixstowe F.5L, itself based on a Curtiss design. Civil aviation in America lagged behind Europe through lack of government support, but Aeromarine's own airline was quite innovative, with branches in Florida and New York plus a Detroit - Cleveland service across Lake Erie. The Great Lakes Division only lasted from July 1922 until September 1923 though. In other photos its aircraft carry names and a light paint job. Here the rear fuselage reads 'Aerial Express' and a British contemporary source mentions the Aerial Express Company of Detroit. Photo from: Wayne State University

The Fokker F.IV was a large single-engined airliner. Only two were built for the US Army as their T-2 transport. Lt Kelly and Lt Macready made the first non-stop flight across the US, from Long Island to San Diego, in 64233 on 2 and 3 May 1923. The aircraft exceeded its regular maximum take-off weight by 42%! The two also stayed airborne for 36 hours on 16 and 17 April. The F.IV had a single-seat cockpit so a door to the cabin was installed to allow them to relieve each other, with an extra set of controls in the cabin. The serial 64233 is a sequential number which pre-dates the fiscal year system introduced in 1922. The aircraft is seen with a small Verville-Sperry M-1 Messenger. Photo from: Library of Congress

A view that became all too familiar for US Army aviation although it did not deploy the H-34 to Vietnam. The C-46 in the background, N9885F, seems to date the photo in 1957 before it was painted as a Delta Air Freighter. Photo by: Joe Scherschel / Life

In 1938 Consolidated ventured to build an efficient large flying boat with a high aspect ratio Davis wing and two big R-3350 Cyclone engines. The Model 31 prototype, NX21731, first flew on 5 May 1939, but no commercial orders were forthcoming. NX21731 was then modified as the XP4Y-1 patrol bomber and the P4Y was ordered into production by the US Navy, but this was cancelled as all R-3350 engines were needed for the B-29. NX21731 allocated BuNo 27852. Photo from: Consolidated / Detroit Public Library
