Rakowice will be known to some viewers as the now urbanized site of the Polish Aviation Museum in Cracow. The He 64 two-seater was designed for the 1932 Challenge International de Tourisme which was organised in Berlin. A 7363-km rally around Europe commenced on 21 August and the leading contenders reached Zagreb on the first day, via Warsaw, Cracow, Prague, Brno and Vienna. The six He 64s were the fastest aircraft, but did not score very well in the technical trials. Dietrich von Massenbach in D-2303 came third in the rally but only 15th overall. At the foot of Europe's highest peak. The Potez company opened a station here in 1929 and evidently used this Potez 32 four-passenger aircraft for sightseeing flights. It had been returned from Canada after brief use by Fast Air Service Transport in Montreal. The Bessonneau hangar was built in 1928 and it still stands! Thankfully it was declared a monument in 2020. Great photo showing K5912 taxiing while another London gets airborne behind it. Five Londons were flown to Sydney as part of the 150th anniversary celebrations of the founding of the colony of Sydney, New South Wales. K5912 was lost on November 14, 1939 when it forced landed on the North Sea. The crew were picked up the HMS Imperial and the aircraft then sunk by gun fire. Brand new, VH-UVU awaits delivery to Western and Southern Provincial Airlines of Sydney. In 1938 UVU was fitted with auxiliary fins to try to improve stability but it remained a troubled aircraft. It was withdrawn from use in 1943 over fears about the safety of the airframe. Photo from: State Library of New South Wales

Built as an A-101, at the time of the accident VH-UHV had been fitted with a Kinner K-5 radial like the later A-129. The aircraft was on a shark patrol when the engine failed. The pilot glided towards Harbord Park but children prevented him landing. The pilot called to the children clear the park. UHV stalled and crashed in scrubland adjoining the park on second approach. Pilot and passenger injured. The area around the park now completely built out and the park is likely a lot smaller than it was in 1935. Photo from: State Library of New South Wales

An early photo of the Vance Viking, or Flying Wing. Here it is single-seat, with a short engine cowling and an odd double tailplane. The aircraft seems to be named Flying A with a winged A, or is it a star? It was completed in July 1932. Claire Vance was killed in a Boeing 40 crash in December 1932 and it then flew very little until it was rebuilt in 1934. For some time during 1932 it wore Bendix race number 61. Tasked with blowing up Konstanz airfield, Maj Arno Albrecht, a German infantry officer with limited flying experience, chose to cross into Switzerland in this Fw 44, NV-KF, on 26 April 1945. It was an early Fw 44F, built in 1934. It was interned and painted in the smart yellow Swiss trainer livery, but rarely used until sold to a flying school at Birrfeld as a glider tug, HB-EBN, in 1953. Photo from: ETH-Bibliothek Zürich

BuNo 1813 in flight near New York - NRAB New York was Floyd Bennett Field. This was one of 50 SBC-4s urgently sold to France in June 1940. 44 of the Helldivers were loaded on the French aircraft carrier Bearn in Halifax, having been pulled across the Canadian border at Haulton, Maine to comply with the US Neutrality Act. Upon the fall of France, Béarn put in at Martinique where the aircraft were left to rot by the Vichy administration. Photo by: Rudy Arnold / Smithsonian Institution
