Built in 1931, this Vega was used, as NR965Y, by Amelia Earhart to fly to from Honolulu, Hawaii to Oakland, California on 11 January 1935. She also took it from LA to Mexico City and from Mexico to Newark. The tailfin records a speedy NY to LA flight as well. The name Record Breaker was given by later owner Glover Ruckstell, who bought the plane in 1939 for sightseeing flights, presumably over the Grand Canyon. NZ995 is the only Harvard listed as transferred to Air Training Corps. It was declared unairworthy in 1943. NZ995 is believed to have formed this part of the Mobile Instructional Unit. The instructional unit was a recruiting tool and consisted of three trucks carrying displays. ATC cadets could operate the Harvard's undercarriage (electrically, not hydraulically) and flaps. The cockpits contained a full set of controls and instruments. The engine could not be started. Photo from: RNZAF/Air Force Museum of New Zealand
