The prototype of the two-seat night fighter variant of the DH.112 Venom, first flown on 22 August 1950 as a private venture. The wooden fuselage nacelle was still made of wood, but the Venom NF.2 entered RAF service as a stopgap due to the late arrival of the Gloster Javelin. The NF.2 had dangerous shortcomings and needed to be replaced by the Venom NF.3. The NF.2 was only operated by No 23 Sqn and, in export Mk.51 form, by Sweden. Photo from: De Havilland

ANA standardised on the Wright Cyclone as used by its prewar DC-3 fleet. VH-IND was an ex USAAF C-47A and also received a passenger door in place the C-47s double doors as part of the civil conversion. After ANA was acquired by Ansett, VH-IND was transferred in 1960 to the group's New Zealand subsidiary, SPANZ, as ZK-BYE. It was refitted with Pratt and Whitney Twin Wasps. The UH-60 and the AH-64 won, the UH-61 and the AH-63 lost and it seems their manufacturers like to forget about these loser designs. One prototype of a civilian variant of the H-61 was built. It reportedly first flew on 5 August 1975, but was already on display at the Paris Air Show in June. Petroleum Helicopters took options on 28 aircraft, but Boeing cancelled the type after it failed to win military orders. A naval variant, the Model 237, lost out to the SH-60 and was never built. It looks like the photo was taken at the factory in Ridley Park, with the Delaware River in the background, but this is unconfirmed. Photo from: Vertical Flight Society

The two flying YAH-63 prototypes were 73-22246 and 73-22247. 22246 crashed on 4 June 1976. It was apparently repaired, although some sources say that instead a static test airframe was made airworthy which supposedly had been allocated 73-22245. We assume this is incorrect, but note that the last digit of the front helo might be a 5 instead of a 6. There is also a suggestion that the serials might be fiscal year 1974 instead of 1973. Photo dated 'circa 1961-1967' by the USCG but HH-52 deliveries did not start until 1963. Livery details without USCG station name seem to indicate an early photo. Photo from: US Coast Guard
