Derived from the Lancaster, the Avro York first flew in 1942 and was intended as a post-war military and civilian airliner. A total of 259 were built and there are only two survivors, the other being in the RAF Museum Cosford Collection. Seen here in the AirSpace hangar at Duxford which is tightly packed. Built in 1946 and flew with BSAA until 1949 then BOAC until 1952. It wore WW506 on RAF trooping contracts and spent three months of 1956 in 'Arabia' according to the CAA, reportedly as JY-ABZ. Other than that it saw out its career with Skyways until cancelled as withdrawn in 1964.

MW169 was given to General de Gaulle by Winston Churchill in the summer of 1945. He may not have used it much himself since he also received a C-54, 44-9148, from President Truman. The aircraft wears regular French roundels on the wings and the Free French Cross of Lorraine on the fuselage; the latter was removed at some point. MW169 transferred to the French navy in 1954. The C-45F Expeditor on the right, 44-86905, was remanufactured with a new serial in 1952. Photo by: Rudy Arnold / Smithsonian Institution
