The transatlantic plane famously stuffed with ping pong balls to make it float. After an emergency landing in Wales, Dick Merrill and entertainer Harry Richman arrived at Croydon on 4 September 1936. They returned to Croydon after a visit to Paris. They flew to Liverpool - Speke on the 10th or 11th and then on the 14th they took off for their return flight from Ainsdale Beach near Southport. Like the rather fatter Blériot 110, F-ALCC, the Bernard 80 GR was built in response to a French air ministry requirement for a GR (Grand Raid, long-distance flight) aircraft that could fly 10,000 km (6,215 miles). Called L'Oiseau Tango, the orange aircraft made a world record closed-circuit flight of 8,960 km in March 1931. Here it is modified to Bernard 81 GR standard with greater wingspan and a four-bladed propeller among other changes. As such it failed to break any world records. The S.55 Santa Maria (I), MM45043 (c/n 10015) flew across the Atlantic to Brazil in February 1927 captained by Francesco de Pinedo. He then headed north but the aircraft burnt at the Theodore Roosevelt Dam, Arizona on 6 April. A replacement aircraft, Santa Maria (II) was shipped to New York and is seen here after assembly at Miller Field on Staten Island. An M1917 tank seems to be in use as a tractor. With this aircraft De Pinedo flew back to Rome. Wearing c/n 10016, it is probably MM40208, which became I-SAAT in the search for the airship Italia, but confirmation is sought. The Air Express was a parasol-winged development of the Vega. The eighth and last example was built for a transatlantic flight by Laura Ingalls. She used it for a voyage through South America instead. Photo likely taken before she changed to a Lockheed 9D Orion, NC14222, late in 1934. The Air Express became NC974Y, see other photo. The second and last Saro Windhover, G-ABJP served with Gibraltar Airways in 1931 on a route to Tangier. In May 1932 it was acquired by Mildred Mary Bruce for a go at the world in-flight-refuelled endurance record, which stood at a whopping 23 days! Bristol Fighter G-ABXA served as a tanker. Three attempts in August 1932 were unsuccessful, with the longest flight lasting only 54 hours. G-ABJP was finally used by Jersey Airways between 1935 and 1938. The DH.86 prototype, first flown as E.2 on 14 January 1934. Owned by Imperial Airways but initially used by Railway Air Services as Diana as Imperial disapproved of the single-pilot cockpit. Renamed Delphinus by Imperial. Converted to two-pilot configuration in August 1934. Served in Asia from 1936. Transferred to BOAC and sent to Cairo in 1940. Impressed by the RAF as HK844 in December 1941. Crashed at Maaten Bagush on 10 April 1942. Possibly repaired but struck off charge on 1 December 1942. Photo from: Nationaal Archief (Netherlands)

Right main gear would not deploy. Substantial damage. Aircraft repaired and eventually scrapped in Cameroon as TJ-ACE. The belly landing took place on Rwy 24, the new jet-length Rwy 06/24 having been built in 1960. The new Schiphol airport opened towards the left side of the photo in 1967. Note: Devon XJ350 at the Aviodrome in Lelystad is painted as PH-MAD. Photo from: Nationaal Archief (Netherlands)

Dutch source says the trainee pilot was Prince Bernhard of the Netherlands. Though German-born, he received flying training with 1 EFTS at Hatfield in 1940-1941. T7414 was built at Cowley in January 1941. It was transferred from 1 EFTS to 20 EFTS at Yeadon and was involved in a crash near Harrogate on 3 September 1941 - not this crash if the Dutch information is correct. Repaired and issued to 11 EFTS at Perth - Scone. Struck off charge in 1951. Fuselage used in rebuild of c/n 83899, ex T7470, G-AKYO, which crashed as D-EMUT in 1957.
