The D.H.85 crashed in Tanzania on August 23, 1934 on a flight from South Africa to Amsterdam, killing the then Dutch owner. He had kept the aircraft on the UK register. VH-UXH stopped at Sydney for demonstration flights on its way to Papua New Guinea with Guinea Airways. The Widgeon never had an official registration or RAAF serial. G-AUKB was reserved but not taken up. G-AEKB was painted in honour of then defence minister Eric Kendall Bowden. The photo is believed to show early test flights as a flying boat. It was later converted to an amphibian. Early test flights took place from a hangar built on the beach to the west of the distinctive La Perouse memorial and close to today's Boatshed Restaurant. After conversion to an amphibian test flying took place at Sydney (Mascot) airport. The Widgeon was delivered in 1927 to the RAAF which flew it for a short time but never gave it a serial. XH481 flew 18,500km non-stop from RAF Scampton to RAAF Richmond in 20 hours refuelling from Valiant tankers stationed along the route. It is seen here departing for RAAF Edinburgh.
