G-ACLX was used to survey the route of the Mildenhall-Melbourne air race that took place later in 1934. The Widgeon never had an official registration or RAAF serial. G-AUKB was reserved but not taken up. G-AEKB was painted in honour of then defence minister Eric Kendall Bowden. The photo is believed to show early test flights as a flying boat. It was later converted to an amphibian. Early test flights took place from a hangar built on the beach to the west of the distinctive La Perouse memorial and close to today's Boatshed Restaurant. After conversion to an amphibian test flying took place at Sydney (Mascot) airport. The Widgeon was delivered in 1927 to the RAAF which flew it for a short time but never gave it a serial. The Widgeon appears to have been grounded at Point Cook in 1929. Photo from: National Library of Australia
