The Widgeon never had an official registration or RAAF serial. G-AUKB was reserved but not taken up. G-AEKB was painted in honour of then defence minister Eric Kendall Bowden. The photo is believed to show early test flights as a flying boat. It was later converted to an amphibian. Early test flights took place from a hangar built on the beach to the west of the distinctive La Perouse memorial and close to today's Boatshed Restaurant. After conversion to an amphibian test flying took place at Sydney (Mascot) airport. The Widgeon was delivered in 1927 to the RAAF which flew it for a short time but never gave it a serial. The Widgeon appears to have been grounded at Point Cook in 1929. Photo from: National Library of Australia

The Widgeon II never carried a serial despite making some long-distance flights. It served for almost two years until it crashed in Port Phillip Bay, Victoria, on January 6, 1930. The then new Widgeon was entry No. 20 in the NSW Aerial Derby in 1928. Margaret Picard collection photo. Photo from: Civil Aviation Historical Society, Melbourne, Australia
