Grumman Widgeon production was continued by SCAN in France from 1948. The venture was not a success and 29 incomplete aircraft were shipped to California where some were converted to PACE Gannet standard with Lycoming R-680 engines by Pacific Aircraft Engineering Co from Sun Valley. N7911C cancelled in 2013. Photo from: ETH-Bibliothek Zürich

The Wonga first flew on June 4, 1930 from Burdekin's Paddock, a rural property at Quakers Hill on what was then Sydney's rural fringe. Such was the secrecy, the aircraft was under 24-hour guard to keep away the curious. On August 13 a storm broke the aircraft's back and the registration cancelled. The Wonga was rebuilt with a Harkness Hornet engine and made several long flights. It was never registered again. On June 16, 1932 it crashed on approach to Burdekin's Paddock killing the pilot and passenger. The photo shows it with the Harkness engine. Photo from: City of Ryde Library

The first aircraft built by Australian aviation pioneer Arthur Butler. He hoped to fly the aircraft to the UK. Plans to replace the unreliable Hermes engine with a Gipsy were abandoned when the aircraft was damaged in storage after an earlier accident. VH-UPE was then scrapped. Photo from: Powerhouse Museum

There were two Mitchells that carried serial N5-131. The first was ferried across the Pacific by the RAF Ferry Command, arriving on 18 April 1942. The USAAF immediately took it and sent it to Papua New Guinea, where it was flying USAAF missions out of Port Moresby. This photo however shows the second aircraft to carry N5-131. It is ex USAAF 41-12916 (often incorrectly quoted as ex 41-12936), and it served with the NEI-AF as N5-131 from Aug 1942 until Jul 1947, when it was reserialled M-331. One of three Oxfords allocated by the RAAF to the USAAF at Townsville. The others were VHCOA and VHCOB however VHCOC is most likely. It had been BM740 in RAAF service, which had retained its RAF serial. The registrations were call signs used by transport aircraft in the South-West Pacific theatre and not civil registrations. They did not have hyphens. VHCOC was returned to the RAAF. Photo from: Townsville City Library
