Despite two prominent private customers, Harold Vanderbilt and speedboat magnate Garfield Wood, the six-passenger F-11 flying boat was not very successful. This airframe was tested by the US Army as the YC-16. Here it is seen wearing Western Air Express markings. WAE was affiliated with the American Fokker company and may have considered it for its seaplane service to Catalina Island, but WAE never operated the aircraft. Location thought to be the Teterboro factory airfield. Photo from: Nederlands Instituut voor Militaire Historie

28 DC-3Ds were built after WWII using surplus parts. The quarters of the Sabena flag were blue, black, yellow and red, the blue top quarter with a yellow star referring to the Belgian Congo colony - see the later photo of this airframe as 9O-CUN of Air Congo. G-EAIM was cancelled from the UK register in 1919 and shipped to Australia. With no register of its own, G-EAIM continued to fly in Australia with its UK registration displayed until it was painted over with the Witch Soap promotion. G-EAIM cross paths with the BE2e C6965, which was promoting Perdiau Rubber, at the Toowoomba racecourse. The racecourse was used in the absence of an aerodrome at the town. G-EAIM crashed at Berri, South Australia, on August 19, 1920. Photo from: Powerhouse Museum

The GAL-38 was a slow four-engine long-endurance aircraft that was supposed to shadow enemy fleet movements - clearly no opposition in the air was expected at sea. The Air Ministry print identifies the type as the S.23/37 after the 1937 specification, but the same designation would apply to the competing Airspeed AS.39 which was also built. This is the first of two GAL-38 prototypes, which had its triple tailfins replaced by a tall single fin by June 1941. The date stamp on the back seems to read June 1943 but P1758 was already ordered to the scrap heap in March 1942. Photo from: Air Ministry (UK)

The Wonga Monoplane was kept under guard at a paddock on the rural fringe of Sydney. That did not stop it being wrecked in a storm. The aircraft was rebuild with an Australian Harkness Hornet engine in place of the Curtiss OX-5 seen here. The registration was cancelled after the storm but the Wonga continued to be test flown after its rebuild. It fatally crashed on June 16, 1932. Photo from: Powerhouse Museum
