This is the actual NZ918, replaced by a fibreglass replica in 2015 due to corrosion. Service club Jaycees converted NZ918 into playground equipment in 1963 with an entry ladder below the rear cockpit and a slide under the nose. Effort was later made to correct the rudder shape but it remained less accurate than the replica. NZ918 can now be seen at nearby Mangatainoka where is mounted on a gimbal and acts a weather vane still with the inaccurate rudder. Photo from: Des White/Air Force Museum of New Zealand

The third of five Panther prototypes. It was a shipboard spotter with a folding fuselage rather than folding wings. Parnell received an order for 300 aircraft but this was soon halved, Parnell's new owner rejected the cut and the 150 aircraft were built by Bristol in 1919-20. The SAML S.1 was a development of the German Aviatik B.1 which had been licence-built in Italy. It had more than double the horsepower of B.1 and although considered obsolete, remained in service until the end of World War I and beyond. In contrast, the Aviatik, a design that dated back to 1912, was largely gone by the end of 1916. Photo from: Library and Archives Canada

N114 was the second of three Blackburds (not Blackbird). It was used for torpedo trials at East Fortune but was also tested at Martlesham Heath and Gosport. Built at Brough, Yorkshire. Blackburds needed to release their undercarriages to release their torpedoes. They landed on skids or ditched. N114 had floats under the wings to aid buoyancy. Lost out to the Short Shirl which as later cancelled in favour of more Sopwith Cuckoos. N114 was used for spares for N115 which flew on into 1919 as a station hack. The serial is 9233, not N9233 as it appears to be in the photo. N9233 was a post-war Fairey III while the 50 Beardmore-built Nieuport 12s were delivered when the RNAS was still using numerical serials. Obsolete by the time they arrived, Beardmore aircraft were used mainly as trainers. Photo from: Library and Archives Canada

Sold in the US after the war ended. Canadian Aeroplanes was the government-owned former Curtiss factory at 1244 Dufferin Street. It is not clear if there was an airstrip at the factory. The factory occupied six acres and all photos of aircraft there were taken inside the building. Captions on those photos suggest the aircraft left the factory dismantled. The RFC had two training airfields a short distance to the factory. Library and Archives Canada

Experimental fighter. Its poor handling saw it rejected for service. B1484 aircraft is sometimes described as the prototype that crashed on August 17, 1917 but other sources say that aircraft had no serial and B1484 was the first production model. It had three guns, not two as fitted to the prototype. Two others built. Location of the photo is not certain but believed to be Joyce Green (named for a farm) where Vickers had its factory. B1484 also flown from Biggin Hill and Martlesham Heath. Photo from: Library and Archives Canada
