Posing with the second S-40, in for maintenance in Dinner Key's Hangar 2. The bottom of the hull has been stripped and resealed. Despite the S-40's awkward and draggy appeance, it operated successfully and safely as one of the largest airliners of its day, carrying 38 passengers plus six crew, or 24 pax on longer flights. Rollout of the second 707 airframe, soon renamed Clipper Maria. The first 707 airframe was N708PA, also for Pan Am but test-flown in Boeing colours. Compared to the 367-80 prototype and the C-135 Stratotanker (Model 717), the 707 had fuselage width expensively increased by just 10 cm (4 in). Photo from: Boeing

Anzac Clipper was delivered to Pan Am in June 1941 and is seen at the Clipper Hawaii Terminal in Pearl Harbor. The flying boat was one hour out from here, inbound from San Francisco, when news of the Japanese attack came in. NC18611 diverted to Hilo and returned to San Francisco. Photo from: SFO Museum

What became of this 1940 DC-3 is unclear. It may have been leased to the US Navy as BuNo 99099, which is listed as lost over spurious 'Yamagaga in North Pacific' on 16 February 1944. NC25643 cancelled in July 1944. Alternatively it went to Mexico as XA-CAM. Photo from Clyde Smith, Pan Am station manager in Fairbanks, and probably taken at old Weeks Field which could be used by DC-3s 'with caution'. At times of bad conditions, airlines were allowed to use Ladd Army Airfield from 1940. Photo from: SFO Museum

Photo dated circa 1958 by the source, though there's another picture of N1026V in front of SFO's new Central Passenger Terminal taken in 1954. N1026V served with Pan Am until 1961, by then renamed Clipper Malay. The Coast Guard HO4S helicopter is 1305 which saved many lives in 1955. Photo from: SFO Museum
