On display at NMUSAF. The ninth P-80A was built as a XP-80B with an improved J33-A-17 turbojet. It was modified as a racer, receiving the designation P-80R. This included a smaller canopy, removal of all armament, re-contoured leading edges and an upgraded engine. Technicians working on the aircraft nicknamed it "Racey." It was flown by Col. Albert Boyd to set a new official world speed record of 623.753 mph on 19 Jun 1947 over Muroc Army Air Field, returning the record to the USA. The previous record of 615.8 mph was set on 7 Sep 1946 by Gp Capt E.M. Donaldson in a Gloster Meteor F.4.

'Panama Cargo Trip'. The aircraft does not wear a regular tail number and seems to be DC-3 c/n 2166, NC21767 of American Airlines on temporary military duty. This theory is supported by the right side passenger door, as specified by AA. Photo by: William Vandivert / Life

'Panama Cargo Trip'. The only reasonable explanation for tail number 2182 would seem to be that this is construction number 2182, a DC-3 of Braniff, NC21776, which is not on record as having been requisitioned. The aircraft wears the same unidentified logo as 1242 and 42-68687. Photo by: William Vandivert / Life

World's only airworthy Guardsman inside the hangar at Planes of Fame Air Museum. Derived from the P-35 fighter, this two-seat advanced trainer was delivered to the USAAF with s/n 41-17529. The aircraft was originally built for Sweden but not delivered after an embargo was declared in 1940. It last served as the base commander's aircraft at Lowery Air Base, Denver. The emblem on the fuselage is of the 17th Pursuit Squadron that later re-equipped with P-40 Warhawks and served in the Philippines at the outbreak of WW2.
