Delivered as as AD-5N to the USN in 1954, this Skyraider operated with various Navy and Marines units, ending up with the Naval Weapons Center at China Lake. During testing at Eglin, maintenance personnel determined it had been overstressed and was no longer safe to fly. Since all nine A-1s at Hurlburt Field had been given to the South Vietnamese Air Force, this one was allocated for display at Hurlburt. Dropped from the Navy inventory in 1971, it was installed in the Air Park in 1972, painted in Vietnam-style camo as per my 1979 photo here

Displayed from 1972 in Vietnam-style camouflage as a 1st SOW aircraft, with the incorrect '51' prefix applied. The unit badge with the legend "Any Time Any Place" was later removed when the aircraft was placed back on its undercarriage for display, along with 'TC' tail code added. Repainted in 2005 to basic USN-style grey to commemorate a Medal of Honour-winning mission in 1968, as per my 2024 photo

During testing at Eglin AFB it was determined that this aircraft had been overstressed and it was retired from service in 1971. It was dedicated in the Air Park on 30 May 1972. Originally mounted on a pylon, as seen in the photo, it is now displayed on its landing gear.

Later to South Vietnamese Air Force, then TOS USAF as 51-0598, assigned to 602nd Special Operations Squadron, Eglin AFB, FL. By late 1965: TOS USN, Naval Weapons Center, NAF China Lake and redesignated NA-1G while there. Ca.11/70: Hurlburt, Field, FL, for display marked as an A-1E.
