Returning passengers to Antwerp after a day shopping excursion, this DC-6 suffered a nose-gear collapse when the F/E raised the undercarriage prematurely just after V1 the day before this photo was taken. 105 on board escaped unharmed after the aircraft skidded to a halt at the end of r/w 24. The tail damage was caused by debris thrown up by the propellers impacting the tarmac. Later scrapped at Southend.

Looking superb just after roll-out and wearing additional 'B' class registration for certification, this Belfast was formerly XR362 and one of four civilianised. Starting life as CX-AOV with PLUNA in 3.54 and enjoying long and varied service including Gulf Aviation, this Heron had recently been registered 9Q-CRL when bought by Channel in 6.69. Soon after, they announced a name change to Air England but this was the only a/c painted as such. Used on feeder services SEN-NWI-EMA. To Peters 5.72 then 5B-CCD, returning to Peters and on to Fairflight in 1977. Bought by Sky of Siam 3.80 as HS-EAA and stored at BKK from 1983; wreck said still to be extant around 2000

Although the 707 became a very familiar part of the Southend landscape, DC-8s have always been far more unusual. She's the former SE-DBG of SAS, sold by Cygnus Air to Compagnie Africaine d'Aviation in 8.08; stored JNB 2011. Behind is 707 9Q-CBW
