The GAL-38 was a slow four-engine long-endurance aircraft that was supposed to shadow enemy fleet movements - clearly no opposition in the air was expected at sea. The Air Ministry print identifies the type as the S.23/37 after the 1937 specification, but the same designation would apply to the competing Airspeed AS.39 which was also built. This is the first of two GAL-38 prototypes, which had its triple tailfins replaced by a tall single fin by June 1941. The date stamp on the back seems to read June 1943 but P1758 was already ordered to the scrap heap in March 1942. Photo from: Air Ministry (UK)

There are two versions as to when and where A16-10 ended on its nose. One says it was an accident at RAAF Richmond on October 31, 1940. The other says the date of the accident was December 31, 1940 and at Darwin. At the time of both accidents the aircraft was with 13 Squadron which was a Darwin-based bomber squadron. The photo is dated 1941. A16-10 was repaired by Clyde Engineering, a large engineering company, at its aircraft repair facility in Sydney. Back in RAAF service, A16-10 was sent to 1 OTU in Victoria. Scrapped in 1948. Photo from: Powerhouse Museum

Dutch source says the trainee pilot was Prince Bernhard of the Netherlands. Though German-born, he received flying training with 1 EFTS at Hatfield in 1940-1941. T7414 was built at Cowley in January 1941. It was transferred from 1 EFTS to 20 EFTS at Yeadon and was involved in a crash near Harrogate on 3 September 1941 - not this crash if the Dutch information is correct. Repaired and issued to 11 EFTS at Perth - Scone. Struck off charge in 1951. Fuselage used in rebuild of c/n 83899, ex T7470, G-AKYO, which crashed as D-EMUT in 1957. LATI ran a service between Rome and South America between late 1939 and late 1941, with an Atlantic crossing via Sal and Fernando de Noronha - also see photo 296698 of an SM.75 in Portugal. Hart Preston's close-up photos of this SM.82 show that it wears airline titles and military serial MM60309. In the foreground and background are mainly Junkers airliners and a Syndicato Condor Fw 200. Mirroring of this photo in the Life archives corrected. Photo by: Hart Preston / Life
