The DH.4A was developed for use on the military cross-Channel service operated by No. 2 (Communicaton) Sqn between Kenley and Buc during the negotiations for the Versailles treaty. Five DH.4s, including F5764, were modified to seat a minister and his secretary face to face in a glazed cabin so that work might continue during the flight. To compensate for the weight of the third occupant, the upper wing was moved aft one foot, meaning the DH.4A had no stagger. Four new DH.4s were also completed as DH.4As for Airco's subsidiary Aircraft Transport & Travel in July 1919. F5764 became G-EAWH with Handley Page Transport. One of ten or so Senior Skyrockets built by the mother company - a dozen more were manufactured in Canada after the war. Assumed photographed when new, the aircraft wears an unidentified logo which seems to depict a torch. During the war, NC15300 assisted the US Army Corps of Engineers in constructing the Canol pipeline to Alaska. It formally became N15300 in April 1948, but the reg was cancelled one month later.

A successful WWI twin-engined fighter? Crewed by one pilot and two gunners, the R.11 did well as a bomber escort in 1918. An American assessment says: 'Fast, good climb and endurance.' Morale was high in the six squadrons flying the type by the end of the war and some of the best gunners were posted to these units. The rudder reads 'Cau XI A3'; the A was for reconnaissance, and the alleged 'R.11 C3' fighter designation does not seem to have existed. 405 is the poids utile (useful load), of course in kilograms. This might perhaps be an aircraft given to Britain for evaluation. Photo from: Imperial War Museums

The Hughes 269 was slow and vulnerable for use as a scout helicopter, but was flown off against the Bell 47, Brantly B-2 and Hiller UH-12 before the British Army selected the good old Bell. Both the Bell and the Hughes were backed by Westland. Photo probably taken in England but the H-269 was demonstrated to British troops in Germany. This airframe wore military serial XS685 briefly during in 1963. G-ASBD changed civilian owners many times and crashed in 1981. Photo from: Air Ministry (UK)

The third 727 for Pan Am delivered new on the 19 January 1966 and then based in Germany (renamed Clipper Munchen). The aircraft crashed eleven months later on what had been an otherwise normal cargo flight in wintry conditions on15 November 1966 approaching Tegel Airport - but in the East German zone. The cause of the crash was not able to be determined as less than 50% of the aircraft wreckage was handed over by the East German authorities and did not include critical items such as flight recorders, instrumentation and many systems components.
