A successful WWI twin-engined fighter? Crewed by one pilot and two gunners, the R.11 did well as a bomber escort in 1918. An American assessment says: 'Fast, good climb and endurance.' Morale was high in the six squadrons flying the type by the end of the war and some of the best gunners were posted to these units. The rudder reads 'Cau XI A3'; the A was for reconnaissance, and the alleged 'R.11 C3' fighter designation does not seem to have existed. 405 is the poids utile (useful load), of course in kilograms. This might perhaps be an aircraft given to Britain for evaluation. Photo from: Imperial War Museums
