The A-24 Banshee was the USAAF variant of the Navy SBD Dauntless dive bomber and the type was heavily involved in the South Pacific in operations against the invading Japanese forces. However, losses were high and the Banshee was regarded by many pilots as too slow, short-ranged and poorly armed to be effective. This example on display at the National Museum of the USAF is actually 42-54582 but is displayed as an airctaft that crashed-landed in Java and subsequently abandoned.

In late 1966 the USAF selected a military variant of the Cessna Model 337 Super Skymaster to supplement the O-1 Bird Dog FAC aircraft. The O-2A Skymaster identified and marked enemy targets with smoke rockets, co-ordinated air strikes and reported target damage. This O-2A was assigned to the 20th TAS Squadron at Da Nang, South Vietnam in the late 1960s and is now on display at the National Museum of the USAF.

The AT-9 advanced trainer was used to bridge the gap between single-engine trainers and twin-engine combat aircraft. The AT-9 was not easy to fly or land, making it particularly suitable for teaching new pilots to cope with the demanding flight characteristics of a new generation of high-performance, multi-engine aircraft such as the B-26 and P-38. This AT-9 at the National Museum of the USAF is one of only two examples that survive today.

First appearing entering combat in May 1918, the Fokker D. VII quickly showed its superior performance over Allied fighters. With its high rate of climb, higher ceiling and excellent handling characteristics, German pilots scored a remarkable 565 victories over Allied aircraft during the month of August alone. The reproduction aircraft on display at the National Museum of the USAF is painted to represent the Fokker D. VII of Lt. Rudolph Stark, a squadron leader of Jasta 35b in Oct. 1918.

In total 2,502 A-26 Invaders and its derivatives were produced seeing service in WWII, the Korean War and Vietnam. The A-26C on display was acquired by the NMUSAF in Sept. 1957 and is painted as 'Dream Girl' (port nose art) representing a B-26C used during the Korean War by the 34th Bomb Squadron flying night intruder missions.

In total 2,502 A-26 Invaders and its derivatives were produced seeing service in WWII, the Korean War and Vietnam. The A-26C on display was acquired by the NMUSAF in Sept. 1957 and is painted as 'Dream Girl' (port nose art) representing a B-26C used during the Korean War by the 34th Bomb Squadron flying night intruder missions.

The CG-4A was the most widely used US troop/cargo glider of WWII. Constructed of fabric-covered wood and metal, the CG-4A was crewed by a pilot and co-pilot. It could carry 13 troops and their equipment or a jeep, a quarter-ton truck or a 75mm howitzer loaded through the upward-hinged nose section. The QU-22B was to be an unmanned airborne relay for the Igloo White operation during the Southeast Asia War. Igloo White placed and monitored sensors to detect traffic along the Ho Chi Minh Trail. Due to equipment reliability problems all operational flights carried a pilot and the system worked well but, due to the loss of several aircraft, the QU-22 program was cancelled in 1972 and this aircraft went on display at the National Museum of the USAF in 2002.

The YPT-16 was a military version of the civilian Ryan STA and became the first monoplane acquired by the Army Air Corps as a primary trainer. This aircraft flew as NC18922 in civilian life but is on display at the National Museum of the USAF as one of the 15 YPT-16 operated by the AAC. They must have been satisfied and this led on to the AAC operating nearly 1,200 more similar Ryan trainers as PT-20s, PT-21s and PT-22s.

The centre-of-gravity problems of earlier models were solved by shifting the engine to the front and the passenger compartment to beneath the rotor hub. Other innovations included offset-flapping hinges and hydraulically boosted irreversible controls. This example is now on display at the Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center of the Smithsonian NASM. This Tropical Spitfire (note the huge cooling air intake) was built for Supermarine under license by Vickers-Armstrong in June 1943. It was shipped to Australia in September 1943, where it served with the RAAF as A58-246. It is on display at the National Museum of the USAF in Operation Torch (the invasion of North Africa in November 1942) markings as MA863 / HL-B 31st Fighter Group, 308th Fighter Squadron.

The L-1 liaison aircraft, originally designated O-49, was the military version of the civilian Stinson Model 74. This example was delivered to the USAAF around 1941 as 40-0291 but is on display at the National Museum of the USAF in this nice US Army medivac scheme.

This NA-64 served with the RCAF as 3417 but is on display at the National Museum of the USAF in this nice diorama to represent an Army Air Corps Bt-14 involved in a training accident. Note the pilot pleading with the instructor that the fact the brakes were applied too hard... really wasn't his fault!
