Combat veteran Spitfire on display at RAF Museum Hendon. This aircraft was built at Castle Bromwich and delivered to No. 611 Sqn. in Feb. 1942. It then went to No. 242 Sqn. in June and No. 222 Sqn. in Aug. 1942. In 1943 the Spitfire moved to No. 64 Sqn. and No. 118 Sqn. After Dec. 1943 its history becomes obscure. It wears the code of No. 222 Sqn. during the Dieppe raid. An Accumulator Trolley is attached to the Electrical and Radio Socket by the wing.

Now preserved at the Aviation Heritage Museum, Bullcreek, Western Australia. It was shipped from the UK to Australia in 1959 and initially displayed on a pole at the RAAF Association headquarters in Perth. It was later moved to Bullcreek, still mounted on poles, until replaced by a fibreglass replica in 1985. PK481 now displayed indoors. This photo shows it being cleaned up as part of its move from Perth to Bullcreek.

This aircraft is made up of parts collected from all over the world including Australia, Burma, England, France, Holland, Malta and New Zealand. As there was no dominant component part it has not utilised an identity. It is on display to honour Nanton-born identical twins Bruce and Douglas Warren. After learning to fly together at 5 Elementary Flying Training School at High River, Alberta they went on to fly RAF Spitfires with 165 and 66 Squadrons. Bruce flew 248 combat operations and Douglas 253. A remarkable feat that both survived through this period.

I visited the Museum on a day that it was closed to the public but a kind gentleman let me in so that I had the place to myself which gave me the chance to remove barriers. This aircraft was devoid of markings under restoration.
