First flight March 5th 1968 as N12826, and deliverd April 1st 1968 to American Flyers Airline. May 1971 TF-FIA Icelandair - Flugfelag Islands, named "Solfaxi". October 1979 TF-FLG rr New Icelandair - Flugleidir October r 31st 1989 TF-FLG sold to UPS. September 1990 N940UP United Parcel Service, ship 940. Re-engined with new RR Tay 651-54 engines. July 2008 Broken up. Seen taxing to depart rwy 24 this friday. Mind the starboard side of the B727-100 :) This was my final shot and sight of thes 727 which was at least a weekly sight since 1971.

The prototype Sea Bird on the ramp outside the Fleetwings seaplane factory. The first flight recorded by test pilot William H. Engle was on 25 March 1937. That and all subsequent flights were recorded as on X16793. The skin is 0.010 thick stainless steel and it has been given a swirl finish to make it look attractive. The wing and empennage structures are also made from stainless steel with fabric covering. Engine is a Jacobs L-5 giving 285 hp. The three-section landing gear fairing disappeared from photos from 1938 on, however this aircraft was seen at Oshkosh 1992 with fairings, although possibly not originals. Not a film set! The Mariner is from an early batch of unarmed transport aircraft. It has Second Series BuNo 6464 and wears the emblem of NATS on the nose. Photo apparently taken at Tarawa which was taken by US Marines in a bloody battle in November 1943. A seaplane base was established in the atoll's lagoon, supported by a seaplane tender. Pictured on top of a container, and presumably on sale, in the yard of this used vehicle dealership, close to the Czech border with Bavaria.

The prototype Sea Bird still in beautiful shape after over 80 years. The only sign of its age is the wrinkled skin which is a mere 0.010 inch thick stainless steel. At a period when most aircraft lasted about 10 years I'm sure Fleetwings did not worry about long-term skin durability at the design phase.
