The P-1H was a 1932 variant of the Parks P-1/P-2, reverting to the P-1 designation perhaps because it was an entry-level model with a 100-hp Kinner K-5 radial. Dean Hammond of Ann Arbor, Michigan purchased the rights from the bankrupt Detroit Aircraft holding, and the designation officially changed to Hammond 100 as of January 1933. Seven examples were reportedly built, of which N15771 (c/n 204) was still airworthy in 2022. Photo from: Dan Shumaker collection

The first Tri-Motor for the US Army Air Corps, an early 4-AT-A. Ex NC3444, it arrived at Wright Field on 8 February 1928, then officially designated as the XC-3. Remained in service until July 1932. By 1931 it no longer wore code P-506. The Army ordered seven 4-AT-Es as C-3As, later modified to C-9 standard. The sole C-4 was a 5-AT-B model and was followed by four 5-AT-Ds as C-4As. There was also a bomber prototype called XB-906, civil reg NX9652. Photo from: US Air Force

The Eagle, only retrospectively designated Model 19 by Curtiss, was a 1919 airliner with a nicely crafted fuselage seating eight people, including the one or two pilots. It was originally a trimotor. The Eagle II was a twin and the Eagle III was powered by single 400-hp Liberty engine. Only a few Eagles were built, the only customer being the US Army Air Service which bought three Eagle IIIs. Optimistically called a 'hospital ship', s/n 64243 was equipped as a four-litter ambulance, but crashed on 28 May 1921. The pilot and all six passengers were killed. During the 1955 flood in Yuba City, California, this particular HO4S rescued 138 people in twelve hours. Photo date and location unknown to me. This airframe served in the US Coast Guard from 1953 until 1967, although it should have been marked as an HH-19G after 1962. It is marked as an HO4S-3, without its G suffix for the USCG model. To civil as N17378.

The Maryland ANG flew the F-51H from 1951 until 1955, and these aircraft equipped an aerobatic team, the Guardian Angels, in 1952-53. The lightweight P-51H differed significantly from earlier Mustangs and was very fast, with a top speed of 760 kmh (472 mph). It did not see action in World War II nor in Korea. 555 Hs were completed out of 2000 ordered. The second aircraft is 44-64505 and the fourth one is 44-64453. The third is 44-64659 or perhaps 44-64559 - not 64-64859, as that serial belongs to a cancelled P-51H. Photo from: US Air Force

The Stearman X-100 bomber first flew on 16 November 1938 according to one source, powered by uncommon P&W R-2180-A Twin Hornet engines. The original nose shape has been changed to a stepped nose here. The type was rejected, but the sole prototype was acquired by the USAAC as the XA-21 'attack aircraft'. Rudder striping abolished in 1940. To ground instructional airframe at Wright Field in 1942. Photo from: National Museum of the US Air Force
