During the 1955 flood in Yuba City, California, this particular HO4S rescued 138 people in twelve hours. Photo date and location unknown to me. This airframe served in the US Coast Guard from 1953 until 1967, although it should have been marked as an HH-19G after 1962. It is marked as an HO4S-3, without its G suffix for the USCG model. To civil as N17378.

The Maryland ANG flew the F-51H from 1951 until 1955, and these aircraft equipped an aerobatic team, the Guardian Angels, in 1952-53. The lightweight P-51H differed significantly from earlier Mustangs and was very fast, with a top speed of 760 kmh (472 mph). It did not see action in World War II nor in Korea. 555 Hs were completed out of 2000 ordered. The second aircraft is 44-64505 and the fourth one is 44-64453. The third is 44-64659 or perhaps 44-64559 - not 64-64859, as that serial belongs to a cancelled P-51H. Photo from: US Air Force

According to Joe Baugher this aircraft was blown over in a storm in 1987. She was stored at AMARC as 2J0083 by 1995, so probably no connection between the damage and storage. Returned to service in 2010 and still active by 2020.Any help on the location and/or year is appreciated. Photographer unknown

The Stearman X-100 bomber first flew on 16 November 1938 according to one source, powered by uncommon P&W R-2180-A Twin Hornet engines. The original nose shape has been changed to a stepped nose here. The type was rejected, but the sole prototype was acquired by the USAAC as the XA-21 attack bomber. Rudder striping abolished in 1940. To ground instructional airframe at Wright Field in 1942. Photo from: National Museum of the US Air Force

C-47A 42-92482 to US Marines as an R4D-5, BuNo 17136, in January 1944. The original caption suggest the Edwards test centre used three R4Ds, one at a time, between 1952 and 1984, and that this was the second one between 1956 and 1979. One of their jobs was to check if lakebeds were dry enough for X-plane emergency landings. Last registration of this airframe, XA-ROM. Photo from: NASA

Shell's attractive Lockheed Orion, flown by Jimmy Doolittle. It was built in Detroit in 1931 as a DL-2A Altair with a metal fuselage. Used as a mailplane by TWA. Following an accident, it was rebuilt as an L-9C in 1932 and sold to Shell. Damaged in 1936, then sold to Paul Mantz for air racing in 1938. The only surviving Orion, it was eventually preserved in Lucerne, Switzerland as "CH-167". Does anyone recognize this airport? On the right is probably a 'Visiting Ships' hangar.
