The prototype XP-87 (Curtiss Model 29A) at what may be its rollout at the factory. The aircraft was dismantled and trucked to Muroc (Edwards AFB) for its first flight in March 1948. A USAF order was cancelled when it was decided the Northrop F-89 would be a better all-weather fighter. Thus ended Curtiss as an aircraft manufacturer and it sold its Columbus factory to North American. The Curtiss-Wright X-19 of 1963, was a tiltwing experiment built by the company's propeller division at Caldwell, New Jersey. Photo by: Hans Groenhoff / Smithsonian Institution

The RAAF took delivery of ten A-25As before cancelling an order for 140 more having deciding dive bombing was outmoded. A69-29 was one of those affected by the cancellation and was never delivered to Australia. It was eventually handed to the US Marines . Only one RAAF A-25 entered service and that was for testing. The 10 were handed back to the USAAF in 1945. Photo by: Hans Groenhoff / Smithsonian Institution

Airworthy P-40M at the Tri-State Warbird Museum with a chequered history. It was assigned USAAF s/n 43-5813 in Jan. 1943, though it never served with the service. It was one of 301 sent to RNZAF under Lend-Lease. Taken on strength with No. 16 Sqn. on 21 May 43, it was assigned s/n NZ3119. Damaged four times between 1943-44, it was relegated to No. 2 OTU. The museum bought the P-40M in 2006. Restored in 2011, it crashed, was rebuilt and won the 2016 Grand Champion WWII & Gold Wrench Award at Oshkosh.

Peacemaker on display in the Cold War Gallery at NMUSAF. It wears the emblem of SAC on its nose of an armored fist holding red lightning flashes and an olive branch. At its peak, SAC operated 342 Peacemakers, of which 209 were bombers and 133 were reconnaissance/bomber (RB) variants. Its B-36 units included the 5th, 6th, 7th, 11th, 28th, 42nd, 72nd, 92nd, 95th and 99th BW. As the big stick in nuclear deterrence, the B-36 held the line till replaced by the B-47 and B-52 in the all-jet SAC bomber force.

J.D. Reed Co of Houston was the owner of this air racing P-38L. The Pegasus that features in the markings is the logo of sponsor Mobil Oil. Reed sold the aircraft in 1953 and was later with the then Confederate Air Force and also raced as White Lightning. Crash-landed in 2001 and ended up with Red Bull. Now fully restored and based in Europe as N25Y. Photo by: Hans Groenhoff / Smithsonian Institution

Reregistered N21C for the 1948 National Air Races. Continued to be raced until 1960 and remained on the register until 1970. Became part of a bundle of Cosmic Wind aircraft, components and jigs sold in UK in 1992. N21C was registered G-NZIC because it looked vaguely like N21C. The original "Memphis Belle" on display in the World War II Gallery at NMUSAF. Built at Boeing Seattle, she was named after Capt. Robert K. Morgan's girlfriend Margaret Polk. Flying with the 324th BS, 91st BG at Bassingbourn, England, the B-17 was the second USAAF bomber to complete 25 missions over Europe between Nov. 1942 and 17 May 1943, preceded by 358th BS B-17F "Hell's Angels" in this feat. She was the first to return to the USA and completed a three-month war bond tour with more than 30 stops.

Occupying a large space in the center of the cavernous hangar, this B-52D is on display at the start of the Southeast Asia War Gallery at the National Museum of the U.S. Air Force. While targeting SAM sites near Vinh on April 9, 1972, a SA-2 missile exploded near the left wing of AQUA 2 flown by Capt. Ken Curry of the 307th SW. The B-52 was damaged extensively, causing fuel leaks. It was flown to Da Nang where it made an emergency landing. All crew members were awarded the DFC. After being repaired, the aircraft flew four more missions over North Vietnam.
