A17-716 being used to test the storpedoette, a small version World War 2 storpedo. An Australian invention, the storpedo used a small parachute to slow the descent of a canister designed to absorb shocks. It was cheaper than a conventional parachute but offering more protection than dropping with no chute at all. The storpedoette was for smaller aircraft than the storpedo required, in particular to deliver critical medical supplies accurately. A17-716 was sold in civil buyers in 1955. Possibly at RAAF Benalla. In 1944 this aircraft was converted to an ambulance. The pilot flew the aircraft from the front seat in an enclosed cockpit. The stretcher was mounted on top of the fuselage frame and covered by a fairing. It operated postwar with this configuration as VH-BIW. It was later restored to a standard two-seat DH82. The source dates the photo in 1927, but the N number hints at 1928 at the earliest and Washington - New York Airline ads we found are from 1929. The lower title seems to read 'Leased from United States Air Transport', and that company supposedly existed between 1929 and 1930. Hoover Field in Arlington, where the Pentagon now stands, was a very small and notoriously dangerous airport, surrounded by a smoking landfill, radio masts and even a roller coaster. A poor but interesting photo of the Santa Maria (I), which was flown from Italy to the USA via Brazil by Francesco de Pinedo and crew. He had enough confidence in the S.55 flying boat to plan to 'puddle jump' from Texas to San Diego, and from Seattle to Chicago! Medina Lake, Texas, and Elephant Butte Lake, New Mexico, were the first stops. He then landed here at the Theodore Roosevelt Dam in Arizona but the aircraft caught fire while refuelling and burnt. De Pinedo immediately cabled Benito Mussolini to request a replacement aircraft - c/n 10016, believed to be MM40208. Photo from: Arizona Historical Society
