Initial registration date was 28 March 1929 (ex NC4938). It was later acquired by New England Airway, which was incorporated on 1 January 1931, and painted in their livery. Considering the factory applied swirl pattern on aluminum areas (a la Spirit of St Louis) the photo date would be closer to early 1929. This Ryan Brougham (ex NC4938) was acquired by the original NEA which was incorporated on 1 January 1931. Could that be managing-director George A. Robinson proudly showing it off? For the record, a copy-cat New England Airways started operating after World War II, prompting legal action which caused them to desist. The source dates the photo in 1927, but the N number hints at 1928 at the earliest and Washington - New York Airline ads we found are from 1929. The lower title seems to read 'Leased from United States Air Transport', and that company supposedly existed between 1929 and 1930. Hoover Field in Arlington, where the Pentagon now stands, was a very small and notoriously dangerous airport, surrounded by a smoking landfill, radio masts and even a roller coaster. G-AUNZ prepares to depart Richmond in the early hours of the morning in an attempt to make the first aerial crossing of the Tasman Sea between Australia and New Zealand. The aircraft and pilots Lieutenant John Moncrieff and Captain George Hood, both new Zealanders, vanished without trace. G-AUIX departed Richmond for the attempted flight to the UK with a crew of two RAAF pilots and a photographer to record the adventure. The flight ended in a crash at Athens on November 26, 1928. The crew survived and the pilots flew back to Australia in 1929 in a Vickers Vellore.

Was in Papua New Guinea at the start of the Pacific War and destroyed in a Japanese air raid. Unclear if it was airworthy at the time.
