The PA-6 first flew in 1946. It had a all-metal tail and fuselage but the wing was wood with fabric covering. NX580 was flown until 1956 when it went into storage. But in 2009 it was reregistered as N390UZ to be restored. A second PA-6, c/n 6-1 NC4000M appeared in 1947 and was all-metal. It did not enter production. Hertfordshire was the name given to a military variant of the DH.95 Flamingo, with oval windows and 22 seats on benches alongside the cabin walls. R2510 was the sole example. It was issued to No 24 Sqn at Hendon which operated a hotchpotch of communications aircraft, including several Flamingos. It crashed at Mill Hill after take-off from Hendon on 23 October 1940, with the loss of eleven lives. Photo from: Imperial War Museums

The S.35 Shetland was designed as a successor to the Sunderland reconnaissance flying boat. There was Saunders-Roe input in the design. The sole S.35 first flew on 14 December 1944 and burnt at its moorings due to the oven in its galley overheating in 1946. The S.40 Shetland II was to carry up to 70 passengers. The sole example, G-AGVD is seen around the time of its first flight on 17 September 1947. Unwanted, it was scrapped in 1951. Photo from: Imperial War Museums

Two Avro-built Cierva C.30A autogyros were delivered to the German Air Ministry in November 1934. Focke-Wulf acquired a licence and completed an unknown number with the unconfirmed designation Fw 30 and name Heuschrecke (grasshopper). Known examples have D-E registrations but this airframe has a D-I reg, indicative of a higher weight class. The most obvious change was the fully enclosed cowling it first had was replaced by a more conventional cowling for a radial engine. The Tiny Mite started out as a development of the Culver Rigid Midget glider but by the time it flew in about 1948 it had evolved considerably. Its registration was cancelled in 1965. The old Grand Prairie Municipal Airport was a centre for gliding in the 1950s and hosted the Nationals in 1956. Encroaching air traffic in the busy Dallas area forced the gliders to move by the 1960s and the airport itself was replaced by a new municipal airport soon after. The old airport finally closed in 1976 after a period as a military airfield. Photo by: Hans Groenhoff / Smithsonian Institution

IWM have some interesting photos from the Focke-Wulf company archives, presumably appropriated in 1945. Arado Ar 64E fighters D-IBUZ and I-IBAP (c/n 0128) are known to have been built by Fw and the location is assumed to be their factory at Bremen - Neuenland airport. The nearest aircraft is almost certainly D-IDAM (c/n 0130), not confirmed as Fw-built. The radial-engined Ar 64 and inline-engined Ar 65 were produced in limited numbers. Registered to Mildred Mary Bruce in July 1934. On 25 November 1934 she took off from Lympne, headed for Cape Town in attempt at record for longest autogyro flight, but damaged the aircraft in France. G-ACVX sold to Redhill Flying Club in September 1936. Sold to Dutch company Autogiro Import in 1937 as PH-ASA. Running out of fuel on 25 May 1938, Hanno van der Velden landed in a field near Oostwold - EHOW did not exist yet - and hit power lines when taking off again. Wreck stored at Waalhaven and destroyed by German bombing in May 1940. Photo from: Nederlands Instituut voor Militaire Historie

This aircraft does not appear in any FAA listing although from fragments of the registration in other photos confirms it is NC18399 as stated by the Smithsonian. Erickson & Remmert were a Waco dealer and the current FAA register shows N18399 to be a temporary registration reserved for use of manufacturers. Maybe that was always the case and this AVN-8 received a permanent registration when sold. Photo by: Rudy Arnold / Smithsonian Institution
