Originally designed by Bristol and first flown in March 1940, the Albemarle bomber featured nosewheel landing gear but was built of welded steel tubes and wood to conserve light alloys, and was adaped to serve as a transport and glider tug. 600 examples were manufactured by the AW Hawksley factory in Brockworth, set up by AW and Hawker Siddeley. This one was used by No 511 Sqn here at Lyneham for flights to Gibraltar. Photo by: W Bellamy / Imperial War Museums

The early Constellations were often volume-restricted rather than weight-restricted. The Speedpak cargo pannier was developed at the request of Eastern Air Lines. It reduced speed by 10 mph and range by 4%. It was electrically lowered for unloading or for removal as it was typically used on shorter flights - note that the unit wears an individual number, 14, and does not belong to the airframe. Eastern actually ordered 14 Speedpaks initially and KLM seven. Photo by: Ralph Morse / Life

The second prototype of the Chase XG-20 assault glider was rebuilt as the XC-123A, America's first jet transport aircraft, first flown on 21 April 1951. The four J47 turbojets burnt too much fuel, but the XC-123 with two piston engines was ordered into production. C-123 production was eventually taken over by Fairchild. T9583 was built in Australia for the RAF in Singapore. Singapore fell to the Japanese before it could be delivered and it was delivered to the RAAF as A9-31. 100 Squadron RAF, which was the intended recipient, evolved into 100 Squadron RAAF and was deployed to Papua New Guinea. T9583 was lost in a crash landing at Port Moresby on June 25, 1942 when returning from a mission. The RAAF serial does appear to have been applied to the aircraft during its brief service.
