Thousands of Airacobras were supplied to the USSR. This one was probably photographed at the Bell factory in Niagara Falls - certainly not in Russia as 42-4725 crashed at Wetaskiwin, Alberta on 30 December during its delivery flight. Photo from: San Diego Air & Space Museum

VH-ABF over Brisbane where Qantas was headquartered at the time. When air services between Australia on the one side and the UK and Africa on the other were cut during World War II, Cooee was unable to get home. Likewise, BOAC's G-AFPZ was trapped on the Australian side, so a swap was arranged. -ABF became G-AFBL in July 1942 and continued with BOAC until scrapped in 1947. A fascinating aircraft type, the S.55 twin-hulled flying boat appears much larger at first than it really was. It was seaworthy and reliable however and made many transatlantic flights promoting the Fascist regime in Italy. Airvia Transportation Co tried the type on the Boston-New York route but this venture was short-lived. Photo by: Leslie Jones / Boston Public Library

Only three examples of the large M-130 flying boat were built for Pan Am. After the outbreak of the Pacific War Philippine Clipper was impressed by the US Navy with her Pan Am crew. It crashed into a mountain near Boonville, California on 21 January 1943, and all 19 people on board were killed. On the tailfin is the Martin company logo. Location thought to be Alameda. Kaydets stored at Hill Field after the war. Apart from one USAAF Stearman PT-13D (42-17672 / 2D27, c/n 75-5835), several US Navy N2S-5 Kaydets can be read. In the top left corner is 52676 / 121, and in the top middle row are (left to right) 52726 / 116, 52731 / 109, 52640 / 29x and 52713 / 93x. In the bottom middle row are (left to right) 52836 / 164, 52758 / 134, 52741 / 125 and 52827 / 154. They all belong to cancelled batch 52627-53049, many of which were apparently built (for the USAAF?) and partially painted, but not delivered. Photo from: Utah State Historical Society

1 Squadron undertook several cross-country formation flights. In December 1936 it was from its base at Laverton to Adelaide-Parafield and back via the old Mildura aerodrome. A year later they ventured all the way to Brisbane-Archerfield and this photo from the Queensland library would normally suggest these aircraft are at Archerfield. However A1-32, second in the line, had been destroyed in a fatal crash at Hamilton, Victoria, on August 31. A1-22 crashed at Point Cook on July 18, 1942. Photo from: State Library of Queensland

Invader 44-34773 was sold off new to Babb Co of Glendale for $2000 in 1946. It seems to be painted as a demonstration aircraft wearing US, French and Venezuelan flags here. Taken on charge by French air force on 5 October 1951. Retired to Musée de l'Air in 1970. Became a gate guard at Villacoublay. Stored at Dugny near LBG in 1993 for restoration.
