The second Vega NR869E. The first (c/n 69) crashed during a round-the-world flight. Salvaged parts were used to prepare this plane, ex NC106N with Standard Oil, for a second attempt. The Stanovo eagle on the fuselage formed the basis for a spectacular red on blue livery. Jimmie Mattern departed solo on 3 June 1933, but found navigation difficult and crashed due to the use of tractor fuel following an unscheduled landing in Siberia. Built in 1930. Named Winnie Mae after the daughter of oil man F. C. Hall, the original owner and a friend of pilot Wiley Post, who used it to win the 1930 National Air Race Derby, from Los Angeles to Chicago, and to fly around the world twice, in 1931 and 1933. The fourth achievement recorded on the rear fuselage is a high-altitude flight on 15 March 1935, with Post wearing an early pressure suit. The aircraft was acquired for preservation by the Smithsonian even before Post's fatal accident in August of the same year. Photo from: San Diego Air & Space Museum

A gem that belonged to famed aviatrix Amelia Earhart, this Vega is on display in the Barron Hilton Pioneers of Flight Gallery exhibition at the National Air and Space Museum. Calling it her "Little Red Bus", Earhart flew this aircraft non-stop across the Atlantic solo in 1932, becoming the first female pilot and second after Charles Lindbergh to accomplish the feat. In the same year, she set another record in this Vega by flying non-stop alone across the USA.

On display in the Time and Navigation exhibition at the National Air and Space Museum. This specially modified 5C Vega set the record in 1931 for a flight around the world, taking 8 days in the hands of Wiley H. Post and Harold Gatty. Post repeated the feat solo, taking only 7 days in July 1933. In March 1935, Post flew this Vega high enough from Burbank to Cleveland to be operating in the jetstream. The Smithsonian acquired 'Winnie Mae' shortly after Post's death in a flying accident in August 1935.

VH-UVK set out for Australia as G-ABGK, Race No. 36, in the 1934 Mildenhall-Melbourne air race. Its race was over when its undercarriage collapsed on landing at Aleppo in Syria. The damaged aircraft was salvaged and shipped to Australia where it was repaired by Horrie Miller, of MacRobertson Miller Airlines fame. He operated -UVK until November 1941 when the RAAF impressed it as A42-1. The Vega survived the war but was scrapped at the orders of the Department of Civil Aviation. Painted orange-yellow with red trim, Shell's NC926Y was built in 1930, when Lockheed was a Detroit Aircraft company. It is seen here at the opening of Vancouver's airport on Sea Island with, left to right, Mayor Taylor, Shell chief pilot John Macready and BC Premier Tolmie. The Vega ended up in Lithuania. This aircraft is distinctive because the DL-1 series Vega had an aluminum fuselage, while the original Vega was plywood-skinned. Although c/n 161 was never in service with the U.S. Military in World War II, this restored Vega bears the distinctive markings of the Army Air Corps Y1C-12 from the 1930s. This aircraft is also distinctive as it was built after the October 1931 demise of Detroit and its subsidiary Lockheed by Richard von Hake and other laid-off employees, completed in March 1933.
