The one and only reconnaissance version of the B-49 to fly. It initially survived the cancellation of the bomber version to make 13 test flights. It was then grounded at Edwards AFB. In 1952 it made one last flight to Northrop's Ontario California factory where it was scrapped in 1953. Photo from: National Library of Australia

'Boeing airplane C-11', perhaps at the factory. The Boeing Model 3 was a slightly revised version of the Model 2. The other two Model 3 airframes, C-5 and C-6, were sold to the US Navy and C-11, modified from airframe C-4, was reportedly delivered to a private owner in Bremerton, Washington in July 1918. Photo source says 1917 but that seems unlikely. Photo from: Katherine Stinson Pictorial Collection / University of New Mexico

In the era of this photo BOAC operated a quicker service with Lancastrians and a comfortable but slow service with Hythes on the UK-Australia route. Both services terminated in Sydney. At the end of 1948 Constellations replaced both types. G-AGJN was scrapped in 1953. Photo from: Whites Aviation Collection/Alexander Turnbull Library

Canada's first Tracker, with MAD boom extended and radome lowered. Delivered to DHC as a pattern and test aircraft in May 1954, serialled X-500. Transferred to the RCN 13 Dec 1954 as 1500 (carried below the tailfin in this photo) and loaned back to DHC. Returned to the RCN 18 Dec 1955 as 1501. Converted to CS2F-1 standard, f/f as such 8 Jan 1957. Eventually to the Shearwater Aviation Museum for display. Often incorrectly quoted as ex BuNo 136519, but its identity is in fact unknown. Sources say that this aircraft was assembled by DHC from sections supplied by Grumman, in which case it may never have received a Grumman c/n. Tracker production numbers support this claim. The X-5 was the first swing-wing aircraft. It was inspired by the Messerschmitt P.1101 research plane, the unflown prototype of which was delivered to Bell in 1948, but the German jet's wing would only would have been adjustable on the ground. Photo by: Loomis Dean / Life
