The date used for this photo is the date written in white ink on the print. It is not the date, December 8, 1944, used by the library. Prototype Ryan PT-21. Retained by Ryan. Tested on floats as the ST-3S and fitted with a canopy as shown in the photo, presumably in hope of picking up an RCAF order. The second prototype of the Espadon (swordfish) jet fighter, seen on display here well before its first flight on 16 September 1949. The small aft ventral air intake turned out to be ineffective. Other intake arrangements were tested, but the Espadon failed to qualify for operational service. Fitted with an auxiliary rocket motor, the third prototype F-WFRG exceeded Mach 1 in level flight in 1953. Photo by: Dmitri Kessel / Life

In between the Stout AT-2 and the Ford 4-AT, Stout built this hideous trimotor aircraft. Its flying qualities were as terrible as its looks. Ford had William Stout removed from the design office and moved on with the AT-4 which looked like a metal copy of the Fokker F.VII-3m. The sole 3-AT was destroyed in a factory fire. The Vega 35 was commenced as the North American NA-35. It lost out to the Ryan STA for a USAAC order. The design and four unfinished aircraft were sold to Lockheed subsidiary Vega. Vega finished the aircraft and from this photo it was offered to the RCAF. Wartime demands on Vega's production capacity saw the aircraft again dropped. The four Vega built aircraft were sold to civil buyers. NX28351 (probably as NC28351) was cancelled from the register in 1948. The Navion, another North American project, used the same wing. Operated by Patricia Airways and Exploration with the photo probably taken at Hudson, a short distance west of the Sioux Lookout base. Hudson was a popular transit point for prospectors and supplies during the Red Lake gold rush. As in the photo, the railroad passed, and still does, close to the steep shore of Lost Lake. During the gold rush there were buildings crammed between the tracks and the water. G-CAFB crashed in September 1927. Photo from: Library and Archive Canada

The Ford Tri-Motor was developed from the Stout 2-AT, with the ugly Stout 3-AT trimotor looking like a step backwards. Ford Air Transport Service flew a number of 2-ATs between Ford factories, but also on America's first commercial air mail routes from 1926. Note additional 'Ford Air Port of Dearborn' titles on the tail. Florida Airways, the forerunner of Eastern Airlines, was another 2-AT operator. Photo from: Wayne State University
