Photo must have been taken on 12 July 1957, the day of the first US presidential flight in a helicopter in a simulated evacuation of the government to Camp David. Eisenhower took off from the South Lawn of the White House in a Bell H-13J, chosen for the type's safety record. Six H-19, H-21 and HUS-1 helicopters operated from The Ellipse. HMX-1 was then an experimental unit. 143973 delivered in May 1957, destroyed in Vietnam on 31 January 1968. Photo by: Paul Schutzer / Life

'President Dwight D Eisenhower arriving in USAF [sic] helicopter.' Already in 1960 presidential helicopters were apparently airlifted overseas. This is probably the headquarters of the South Korean VI army corps, which Eisenhower visited on 20 June 1960. 147179 was one of seven HUS-1Z (later VH-34D) VVIP machines. Airframe noted at Carson Helicopters, Perkasie, Pennsylvania in 2001. The second helicopter belongs to HMR-162, then based at Okinawa, and the third to the presidential unit again, HMX-1. This aircraft completed 65 missions against Japan with the USAAF and 45 more with the USAF in Korea. It was scrapped in 1954. Photographed for 'Illegal Flights To Cuba' story, but the unserviceable T-28s here, 159, 152, and 153, were once ordered by the Cuban air force and not delivered following the Cuban Revolution. Cuba ordered ten T-28As, numbered 150 to 159. Following the Cuban Revolution, Fidel Castro's Revolutionary Air Force (FAR) tried to get these Trojans delivered through Air International in Miami, but this did not go ahead. Some of them are seen here in FAR markings. It is unlikely that they have anything to do with anti-Castro rebel flights, as the source suggests. Joe Baugher's website gives FY 1949 serials for the ten T-28As, but not tie-ups. Photo by: Hank Walker / Life

One of the first Beech 18s for the US Navy. JR was for utility transport. The JRB-1 had a fairing over the cockpit for increased visibility, apparently for drone direction. According to Wikipedial, the JRB was officially named Voyager but commonly called Expeditor, not Navigator. Photo from: Beechcraft
