George AFB Air Show 1978. Owned by the American Air Museum. Painted in the markings of the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA) which was the forerunner of NASA. Ordered as 45-21787, delivered to the USN as BuNo 84029 on 05 May 1947 as a P2B-1S. On to NACA as 137 where it was called 'Fertile Myrtle'. WFU at NAS Litchfield Park on 05Aug 1959 and later transferred to storage at MASDC, Davis Monthan. Restored and delivered to Oakland, CA in Nov 1969. To N91329 with the American Air Museum. Registered to N29KW on 30 Apr 1987. In 2023 dismantled at Fantasy of Flight, Polk City, FL.

It is always impressive to see a B-29! This aircraft was modified to carry nuclear weapons and served with the USAF until 1954. In 1972 it was shipped to South Korea for display, first in the Seoul War Memorial Museum, later in the KAI Aerospace museum.

Immediately after the war the USAAF sent this B-29 to Australia so that Australians could see what the famous aircraft looked like and also donate to a War Bond drive. It was re-named 'Waltzing Matilda' for the tour, which included every major city in Australia, as well as many smaller ones. Photo from: State Library of Western Australia

This is the former NACA 137, which was the in-flight launch aircraft for the Douglas D-558-II Skyrocket. Note the Skyrocket launch record board on the nose. Originally delivered to the USAAF in 1945 as 45-21787, then transferred to the US Navy as 84029 in 1947 before joining NACA circa 1949. Withdrawn from use in August 1959 and stored at Davis-Monthan. Acquired by the American Air Museum Society in early 1969, and restored to flying condition at Tucson. Seen here shortly after its ferry flight from Tucson to Oakland, where restoration would continue. First post-restoration flight took place on 27 April 1978.

Served duty in the Korean War. It was converted to "Silverplate" Victor number 77. 9 August 1945: Dropped the "Fat Man" atomic bomb on Nagasaki, Japan. 11 September 1946: Davis-Monthan for storage. 26 September 1961: Flew to Patterson Field, Wright-Patterson AFB, OH, for the Air Force Museum. 17 October 1970: Towed to the new Museum facility at Wright Field.

This B-29 was delivered on August 9, 1945, and after the Second World War was assigned to the 509th Bombardment Group stationed at Roswell. After many years on display at Chanute AFB in Illinois, it became part of the collections of the Museum of Nuclear Science in 1993 and was restored in 2015.

Named after the test pilot who lost his life in a B-29 prototype. 42-24579 was combat damaged in May 1945 soon after being transferred from India to Tinian Island in the Pacific. Enola Gay with is original circle arrow tail marking used by the 509th, the atomic bomb unit. This was changed soon after arriving at Tinian to circle R to disguise the unit among other B-29 squadrons. Enola Gay wore the circle R tail markings when it dropped the bomb on Hiroshima. 42-6344 was declared war weary after eight months based in India and returned to the US where it was scrapped in 1949. Location is given as an airfield in China. The USAAF B-29s based in India used forward bases in China to strike Japan. For the 40th Bomb Group which received this aircraft the forward base in China was today's Xinjin airport. The lack of unit markings may signify it was not on a mission when the photo was taken and may be on its delivery flight to India in April 1944.
