The identity of this aircraft is not definite. It is not listed in Air Britain's DC-3 monograph but one source says it is N638NA. Air Britain says N638NA was acquired by NASA in 1961. NASA did not adopt civil registrations until around 1969 and used special NASA serials before then. Until evidence to the contrary is produced, NASA 236 has been listed as the same aircraft as N638NA. Photo from: National Archives at College Park, Maryland

Used for micro-gravity tests. The photo is over Lake Erie which was where these tests took place from the aircraft's base at the Glenn Research Center in Cleveland. The obsolete aircraft was not returned to desert storage in Arizona after the tests were finished but left in open storage at Cleveland until turned over the fire service. This UH-19D was in storage by the USAF Museum restoration hangars across the airfield from the museum when I took this slide. It is now at the Museum of Aviation at Warner Robins AFB, Georgia, but is currently being restored and not on display as of July 2022.

This is the first of two X-5 a/c built. It first flew on 20 June 1951 and had last test flight on 25 October 1955. It was then used as a chase aircraft until 1958, when it was transferred to the museum. This slide was taken in the outdoor aircraft display area at the original museum on Patterson AFB. It is now on display in the Research and Development Gallery in the current museum.
