Built in 1945, too late to see active service in the Second World War, this Lancaster flew for the French navy in the early 1950s as WU-13. It was deployed to New Caledonia in 1957 until its donation to MOTAT in 1964. The aircraft is now painted as NE181 JN-M, which served with 75 (NZ) squadron and completed over 100 bombing missions in Europe during WWII.

Operated by B Flight, a training unit, at RAF Gosport. The "S" serial in this era stood for "Sea". It was for aircraft used by the Fleet Air Arm and aircraft used to train crews for the Fleet Air Arm. In the case of S1710, this was torpedo dropping. The FAA was administratively part of the RAF at the time. However aircraft assigned to ships came under Royal Navy command. In 1939 the entire FAA was put under navy control. DR845 was the prototype for Griffin-engined Spitfires. Originally designated Mk. IV, it was changed to Mk.XX (or F20) to avoid confusion with the PR.IV. The pristine condition of the aircraft suggests the photo was taken around the time of its first flight on November 27, 1941. That flight took place at Worthy Down (airfield closed in 1960 but site remained a defence establishment at the time of upload) and that has been used here. However, no location was provided by the IWM. Photo from: Imperial War Museums

This aircraft has been fitted with under wing pylons for Shrike missiles / ECM jamming pods as used in the Falklands conflict. These are visible outboard of the main gear doors. XM612 was involved in the Falklands operations but did not perform shrike missions. In fact it never went beyond Ascension Island having been slated as a back up aircraft on a number of missions. Also of note is the 1000 gallon auxiliary fuel tank which is sitting under the starboard wing. This could be installed in the bomb-bay to extend operational range at the expense of some bomb load.

The identity of this aircraft is complex. It is a composite airframe consisting of the fuselage of Ex Saudi F53 53-686 with the wings of 53-700. The port side is in Saudi Air Force markings with the "correct" serial number 53-686. The starboard side is in RAF 74 Squadron markings as XR768 / A. However these same markings had also been applied to a totally different F53 (53-672). The aircraft pictured had also previously had the genuine UK military serial ZF592 and the UK civil registration G-AWON, which it wore prior to original delivery to Saudi Arabia.
