DR845 was the prototype for Griffin-engined Spitfires. Originally designated Mk. IV, it was changed to Mk.XX (or F20) to avoid confusion with the PR.IV. The pristine condition of the aircraft suggests the photo was taken around the time of its first flight on November 27, 1941. That flight took place at Worthy Down (airfield closed in 1960 but site remained a defence establishment at the time of upload) and that has been used here.
