This aircraft is shown as taken on charge by RAF but there is no indication it crossed the Atlantic. It was used as a development aircraft for DHC built models. Built as an FB21, it played a part in the development of the FB24 and FB26, essentially testing the more powerful Merlin engines fitted to these variants. Only the latter went into production. A production Airco De Havilland D.H.9A - E8407, fitted with a Liberty engine. The D.H.9A was a single-engine light bomber and this type was used towards the end of WWI. This copy of the image is an official wet stamped reprint by British Aerospace (No 22022B), date and photographer unknown.

On 1 January 1945 Lancaster DP377 'WS-U' was involved on a dawn attack on the Dortmund-Ems canal, when the bomber was badly hit by two shells, setting the aircraft ablaze. FS Thompson noticed the mid-upper gunner on fire and helped him to a safe place. Badly burned himself, he went to drag the rear-gunner, also ablaze, to a safe space. The aircraft crash landed and the crew were taken to hospital. Thompson started to recover, but developed pneumonia and passed away. Two weeks later he was posthumously awarded the Victoria Cross, now proudly commemorated on the tail of this 9 Sqn Typhoon FGR4.

The aircraft had been deregistered by then, so probably a static air frame. .

FSM built for the Battle of Britain film. In the markings of 257 Sqdn. Was reported to be in the Battle of Britain Museum at Hawkinge in 2020 but not shown in Wrecks & Relics 27 or 28.

This aircraft's civil registration remains valid as of summer 2022, though it doesn't fly any more.

With '101 Squadron 95th Anniversary 1917-2012' markings on the tail and '50 years of VC-10 flying 1962-2012' titles on the engine cowling. Delivered to the RAF as C.1 XR808 in 1966. Converted to a C.1K tanker in 1995/7. Last flight to Bruntingthorpe in 2013. Dismantled and moved to Cosford for preservation in 2015.
